The successful candidate will lead a team of Energy Officers to expand access to clean, affordable energy solutions in off-grid communities.

As Area Business Manager, you will be responsible for building and sustaining a high-performing sales team while ensuring excellent customer service and timely collections. You will work closely with regional leadership to meet sales targets and promote Sun King’s mission of providing reliable solar power to underserved areas.

This position requires strong leadership, field-based management skills, and a passion for renewable energy and social impact. You will operate with autonomy in managing daily operations while aligning with company-wide goals for growth and sustainability in the Masaka region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop partnerships with local influencers including village heads, teachers, and religious leaders to identify and attract talent.
  • Provide comprehensive training on sales techniques, product knowledge, collections, logistics, and customer service for all Energy Officers.
  • Conduct weekly field visits or check-ins with each Energy Officer to monitor performance, resolve challenges, and offer support.
  • Ensure every Energy Officer completes their first five sales under direct supervision to confirm mastery of the sales and collection process.
  • Set clear daily targets, sales routes, and performance expectations for all team members to ensure accountability and productivity.
  • Monitor inventory levels, manage product distribution, and coordinate logistics to prevent stockouts or delays in service delivery.
  • Report weekly on team performance, challenges, and field observations to the Regional Business Manager with actionable insights.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, Social Sciences, or a related field from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in sales management, field operations, or team leadership within Uganda or similar markets.
  • Proven ability to recruit, train, and manage large teams of field-based agents or sales representatives in rural or semi-urban areas.
  • Strong understanding of Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) business models, preferably in solar, telecommunications, or financial services sectors.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate teams and build trust with community stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Previous experience working with solar energy companies or renewable energy distribution networks in East Africa.
  • Familiarity with the Masaka region, including local languages, customs, and key community structures.
  • Experience using mobile data collection tools, CRM systems, or field management software for tracking sales and agent performance.
  • Demonstrated success in exceeding sales targets and improving collection rates in challenging market environments.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel frequently across the Masaka district for field supervision.

What the Role Offers

  • Competitive monthly salary commensurate with experience, plus performance-based bonuses tied to team sales and collection targets.
  • Company-provided motorcycle or transport allowance to facilitate reliable movement across the Masaka area for field visits.
  • Monthly airtime and data bundle to support communication with team members and regional management.
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage including inpatient and outpatient care for the employee and immediate dependents.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and advancement within Sun King’s expanding East Africa operations.
