LABE Uganda

Job Overview

LABE Uganda is seeking a dedicated Field Education Officer to support the PlayMatters project in Yumbe district. This role focuses on promoting learning through play for children aged 3 to 12+ who have been affected by conflict. The officer will work closely with schools, community structures, and local education authorities to ensure that play‑based learning approaches are visible and effective in target schools.

The position is a full‑time contract initially for three years, subject to annual renewal, with an effective start date of 17th August 2026. The successful candidate will report to the Project Coordinator – PlayMatters Project and will supervise school project teachers. This is an excellent opportunity for an education professional passionate about inclusive learning and community engagement in a humanitarian context.

Key Responsibilities

The Field Education Officer will collaborate with district and community level education structures to monitor and support the application of Learning through Play (LtP) in target schools. This includes conducting regular school visits, observing classroom practices, and providing constructive feedback to teachers on how to integrate play‑based activities into daily lessons.

Another core duty is to facilitate training sessions for school project teachers and caregivers on LtP methodologies, gender responsiveness, and inclusion strategies. The officer will develop simple training materials, organize workshops, and follow up to ensure that knowledge is transferred into practice.

The role also involves coordinating with local government officials, civil society partners, and community leaders to align project activities with district education plans. The officer will attend stakeholder meetings, share progress updates, and advocate for resources that support sustainable play‑based learning.

Monitoring and reporting are essential components of the job. The officer will collect data on project outputs, track attendance and participation rates, and prepare concise reports for the Project Coordinator. They will also document best practices, lessons learned, and case studies that can be shared across the PlayMatters consortium.

Finally, the Field Education Officer will support the supervision of school project teachers by providing mentorship, conducting performance reviews, and identifying professional development needs. This ensures that the teaching workforce remains motivated and capable of delivering high‑quality LtP interventions.

Qualifications & Experience

Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, or a related field. A master’s degree in Education, Curriculum Development, or International Development is considered an added advantage. The academic background should demonstrate a solid understanding of pedagogical theories, especially those related to experiential and play‑based learning.

A minimum of three years of progressive experience in education programme implementation is required. This experience should include work in primary education, community‑based learning, or emergency education settings. Familiarity with the Ugandan education system, particularly in the West Nile region, is highly desirable.

Proven ability to train and mentor teachers is essential. Candidates should have facilitated workshops, developed training guides, and provided classroom coaching. Experience working with children aged 3‑12, especially in conflict‑affected or refugee contexts, will be viewed favorably.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, teachers, parents, and community leaders. Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in Lugbara or other local languages spoken in Yumbe is an asset.

The candidate must be computer literate, comfortable with data collection tools, and able to produce clear written reports. A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel frequently within Yumbe district and surrounding areas are also required.

Benefits & Perks

LABE Uganda offers a competitive monthly salary that reflects the candidate’s qualifications and experience, in line with NGO sector standards in Uganda. In addition to the base salary, the position includes a monthly housing allowance to assist with accommodation costs in Yumbe.

Transportation is facilitated through a fuel stipend or provision of a project vehicle for official duties, ensuring that the officer can reach schools and community sites reliably. A daily lunch allowance is provided for days spent in the field.

Health coverage is a key benefit; the employer contributes to a medical insurance plan that covers inpatient and outpatient services for the employee and their immediate family. This helps mitigate health‑related risks while working in remote areas.

Professional development is supported through access to short courses, workshops, and conferences related to education in emergencies, play‑based learning, and monitoring and evaluation. Employees are encouraged to pursue further studies with study leave options subject to approval.
