Job Overview

Stanbic Bank Uganda is seeking a highly skilled Tax Compliance & Reporting Manager to join its dynamic finance team. This role is critical in ensuring the bank adheres to all tax legislation and regulatory requirements while minimizing tax-related risks. The successful candidate will provide expert tax advisory services across business units and support functions to maintain compliance and protect the bank’s reputation.

Operating within a dedicated tax portfolio, the manager will analyse operational activities to identify compliance risks and ensure adherence to applicable tax laws, regulatory standards, and internal policies. This position plays a key role in enabling the bank’s competitive advantage through sound tax management and proactive risk mitigation strategies.

The role involves preparing and reviewing tax returns, computations, regulatory submissions, and management reports in line with statutory and governance requirements. Collaboration with internal stakeholders and external bodies such as tax authorities and auditors is essential to ensure seamless tax operations and accurate reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute tax processes and services for stakeholders within a dedicated portfolio to minimise tax risks and ensure compliance with Ugandan tax laws.
  • Provide advisory services on tax aspects of products, transactions, and operational activities to prevent fines, penalties, or reputational damage.
  • Analyse operational activities within the tax portfolio to identify compliance risks and ensure adherence to tax legislation and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare and review tax returns, tax computations, regulatory submissions, and management reports according to statutory and governance standards.
  • Advise business units and support functions on tax implications to ensure the portfolio can manage compliance risks effectively.
  • Liaise with tax authorities, auditors, and external stakeholders on tax-related matters to maintain positive relationships and transparency.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency through process optimisation, automation, and data analytics in tax reporting.
  • Provide training to Business, Finance, and other stakeholders on tax technical matters affecting the business area.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, economics, business administration, commerce, or statistics from a recognised institution.
  • Minimum of 4 to 5 years’ experience in tax compliance, tax risk management, tax audits, and tax advisory services within Banking and Financial Services.
  • Working knowledge of SAP, Finacle, and Microsoft Office applications, particularly advanced Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Sound knowledge of direct and indirect taxes applicable to banking operations, with understanding of banking products and services.
  • Proven ability to analyse operational activities and identify tax compliance risks to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.

Desirable

  • Professional qualifications such as ACCA, CPA, or Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) certification.
  • Experience leveraging automation and data analytics tools to streamline tax processes and enhance reporting accuracy.
  • Demonstrated success in process improvement initiatives that increase efficiency and reduce manual effort in tax functions.
  • Prior experience in preparing regulatory submissions and liaising with tax authorities in the Ugandan banking sector.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to train and advise non-technical stakeholders on complex tax matters.
