PULA

Job Overview

PULA is seeking a results-driven Commercial Manager to lead market expansion in Uganda. This role sits at the intersection of sales, stakeholder engagement, and mission-driven advocacy. You will represent an insuretech firm that has unlocked over $2.22 billion in climate capital and paid out $40.8 million to smallholder farmers. The position is full-time and based in Uganda, serving as the commercial engine for one of Africa’s most impactful fintech ventures.

The Commercial Manager is not a traditional salesperson. This is a strategic evangelist role. You will translate PULA’s vision into partnerships, government buy-in, and farmer adoption across Uganda’s agricultural corridors. Success means measurable growth in farmer enrollment, insurer distribution, and public-sector alignment. If you are passionate about transforming rural economies through climate insurance, this is your platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a commercial strategy to grow PULA’s Uganda market share in agriculture insurance.
  • Build and maintain relationships with government ministries, development agencies, and local leaders.
  • Evangelize the value of index-based insurance to stakeholders at all levels, from ministers to farmers.
  • Coordinate with product and operations teams to ensure smooth rollout of insurance products in new districts.
  • Track and report on key commercial metrics, including farmer acquisition, premium volume, and payout rates.
  • Identify new distribution partners such as cooperatives, agribusinesses, and microfinance institutions.
  • Lead field demonstrations and farmer education campaigns to drive product awareness and trust.
  • Represent PULA at industry conferences, policy forums, and media events to strengthen brand positioning.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Agriculture, Economics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in sales, business development, or stakeholder engagement within agriculture, insurance, or development sectors in Uganda.
  • Proven track record of building partnerships with government or non-governmental organizations.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Luganda or other local Ugandan languages.
  • Strong analytical abilities to interpret market data and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Ability to travel frequently across rural Uganda and work independently in remote settings.

Desirable

  • Master’s degree in Business, Public Policy, or International Development.
  • Experience working with insuretech, agritech, or climate risk firms.
  • Familiarity with Uganda’s agricultural insurance regulatory framework and policy landscape.
  • Previous success in scaling a commercial operation from zero to measurable revenue.
  • Fluency in Swahili or other regional languages such as Runyankole or Ateso.

What the Role Offers

  • Competitive base salary with performance-based bonuses tied to farmer enrollment and premium growth.
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage for you and your immediate family, aligned with Uganda’s private healthcare providers.
  • Monthly transport allowance to cover field visits across Uganda’s districts and rural areas.
  • Housing stipend or company-provided accommodation during extended field assignments in remote regions.
  • Lunch and meal allowances provided during office hours and fieldwork days.
  • Opportunity to join a high-impact mission that has already transformed the lives of over 22 million farmers.
  • Access to a global network of investors, insurers, and development partners across 19 markets.
  • Professional development support including training, certifications, and leadership workshops.
  • Flexible working hours with remote work options for administrative tasks, balanced with field requirements.
  • Equity participation in PULA’s long-term growth, with the potential to become a dollar millionaire through mission success.
