Job Overview
Baikal Financial Services is seeking a skilled Accountant to join its finance team in Kampala. This full-time role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with experience in financial services or microfinance. The position offers stability and growth in a regulated financial environment.
The successful candidate will ensure accurate financial recording, support loan accounting, and maintain compliance with Ugandan tax and regulatory standards. You will work closely with internal teams to produce timely financial reports and support audit readiness.

Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate books of accounts by posting journal entries and ensuring proper classification of all financial transactions.
- Process borrower loan repayments with precision, allocating funds to correct principal, interest, and fee accounts daily.
- Manage accounts payable and receivable cycles, including vendor invoicing, payment processing, and customer follow-ups.
- Perform monthly bank, cash, and loan reconciliations to identify and resolve discrepancies promptly.
- Support accounting for loan disbursements and asset financing, ensuring proper documentation and ledger updates.
- Prepare and file statutory returns including VAT, PAYE, WHT, and NSSF in accordance with URA deadlines and regulations.
- Generate monthly management accounts and financial reports for internal review and board presentation.
- Assist in audit preparation by organizing schedules, reconciling balances, and providing documentation to external auditors.
- Ensure all accounting records comply with IFRS for SMEs, Ugandan Companies Act, and microfinance regulatory requirements.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from a recognized university.
- CPA (U) or ACCA qualification, either completed or actively pursuing with verifiable progress.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on accounting experience in financial services, microfinance, or banking.
- Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, or core banking systems, plus advanced Excel skills.
- Strong working knowledge of Ugandan tax laws, including VAT, PAYE, and withholding tax obligations.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accuracy under pressure while meeting strict monthly reporting deadlines.
Desirable
- Experience in Boda Boda lending, asset financing, or hire-purchase accounting is considered an advantage.
- Familiarity with core banking platforms like Temenos, Mambu, or Finacle used in Ugandan financial institutions.
- Prior exposure to internal or external audit processes, particularly in regulated financial environments.
- Knowledge of Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) reporting and loan provisioning under BOU guidelines.
- Ability to train junior staff or interns on accounting procedures and software usage.
