Job Overview

Twyford International Uganda is seeking an experienced Employee Relations Supervisor to join their HR team at the Kapeeka facility in Luwero District. This full-time position offers the opportunity to work with a diverse workforce in a leading international manufacturing environment. The role focuses on maintaining positive employee relations, ensuring compliance with Ugandan labour laws, and resolving workplace disputes fairly and effectively.

The successful candidate will report to the HR Manager and play a key role in fostering a harmonious workplace culture. You will be responsible for managing grievance procedures, overseeing disciplinary processes, and providing guidance to supervisors and employees on employment matters. This position requires strong interpersonal skills and a deep understanding of industrial relations practices in Uganda.

Key Responsibilities

  • Handle employee grievances and complaints by conducting fair investigations and implementing appropriate resolutions in line with company policy.
  • Manage disciplinary processes from initial warning to termination, ensuring all actions comply with Ugandan labour legislation and internal procedures.
  • Provide advice and support to line managers on employee relations issues, including performance management and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with the Employment Act, Labour Unions Act, and other relevant Ugandan employment laws and regulations.
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections and employee forums to identify potential relations issues before they escalate into formal disputes.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records of all employee relations cases, including minutes of meetings and documentation for potential legal proceedings.
  • Collaborate with the HR team to develop and update employee handbooks, policies, and procedures that promote fair treatment and workplace harmony.
  • Represent the company in labour court proceedings and negotiations with trade unions when required, preparing all necessary documentation and briefing legal counsel.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Law, or a closely related social science field from a recognized university.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years progressive experience in employee relations roles, with at least 2-3 years in a supervisory or team leadership position.
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge of Ugandan labour laws, including the Employment Act 2006 and subsequent amendments and regulations.
  • Proven ability to conduct fair investigations, mediate conflicts, and negotiate settlements between employees and management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to prepare clear reports and conduct sensitive interviews.

Desirable

  • Professional HR certification from a recognized body such as the Institute of Human Resource Management Uganda (IHRM-U) or equivalent international qualification.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment with shift workers and unionized labour forces.
  • Training in alternative dispute resolution methods, including mediation and arbitration techniques.
  • Familiarity with HR information systems and experience using software for case management and reporting.
  • Previous experience in conducting workplace training sessions on topics such as discipline, grievance handling, and labour rights.
