Job Overview

Equity Bank Uganda is recruiting a Head of Trading to lead its Treasury dealing desk, with a single vacancy reporting to the Head of Treasury. The role carries the Job Ref: Treasury/08/2026/01 and is based in Uganda on a full time banking contract.

The position holder will be charged with the management of the Bank’s foreign exchange and interest rate exposure, in line with Equity Bank’s business growth strategy across the region. The Head of Trading will set the desk’s tone for disciplined risk taking and consistent profitability.

Working closely with Treasury, Risk, Finance, and external counterparties, the successful candidate will shape trading strategy, supervise daily dealing activity, and ensure all positions remain within internal and Bank of Uganda policy limits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Track exchange and interest rate movements in local and international markets, hedging customer driven exposure while managing the bank’s position with the prevailing market trends.
  • Maintain FX positions for the bank within approved parameters and ensure profitable covering of open positions in the interbank markets.
  • Provide competitive quotes for both FX and money market products aimed at servicing currency requirements for Equity Bank clients while ensuring maximum returns in line with revenue aspirations.
  • Liaise with other subsidiaries and counterparties on maximisation of trading income and build relationships with brokers and dealers to identify fixed income securities for investing and trading.
  • Analyse fixed income securities and invest in government securities, drawing on industry research, historical data, and projected financial statements to guide investment decisions.
  • Formulate and implement both the money market and fixed income trading strategies that align with the bank’s overall risk appetite.
  • Manage cash flow, liquidity, and interest rate risk for the bank, ensuring all key risk indicators stay in compliance with internal limits and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare monthly ALCO reports, monitor foreign currency exposure against internal and BOU policy limits, and support timely renewal of interbank and counterparty limits.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Business Administration, or a closely related quantitative discipline from a recognised university.
  • A minimum of seven years of hands on treasury or trading room experience within a commercial bank or reputable financial institution.
  • Proven track record in FX, money market, and fixed income dealing, with demonstrable P and L responsibility for a trading book.
  • Strong working knowledge of trading platforms such as Reuters Refinitiv and Bloomberg, plus standard interbank settlement conventions.
  • Solid understanding of Bank of Uganda regulations, liquidity requirements, and the local interbank market structure.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret market data, model risk scenarios, and make decisive calls under pressure.

Desirable

  • A master’s degree in finance, Financial Engineering, or an MBA with a finance specialisation from a recognised institution.
  • A professional qualification such as ACI Dealing Certificate, CFA, FRM, or an equivalent treasury or risk certification.
  • Prior experience managing a dealing desk or team of dealers within a regional or international bank operating in East Africa.
  • Familiarity with treasury management systems, core banking integrations, and automated reconciliation tools used by large banks.

What the Role Offers

  • A senior leadership seat within Equity Bank Uganda’s Treasury function, reporting directly to the Head of Treasury.
  • Competitive executive remuneration package benchmarked to the Ugandan banking market, with performance based incentives tied to trading book results.
  • Comprehensive medical cover for the employee and dependents, in line with Equity Bank’s staff welfare policy.
  • Access to continuous professional development, including sponsored ACI, CFA, and risk management certifications.
  • A collaborative working environment with exposure to regional Treasury teams across the Equity Group ecosystem.
