Job Overview

The Operator position at Nile Breweries is a critical role focused on maintaining safe and efficient brewing operations. This full-time position requires hands-on involvement in monitoring, controlling, and maintaining brewing equipment and processes across key areas such as the brewhouse, cellars, and filtration. The role ensures product quality, process consistency, and adherence to safety standards while supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Operators work closely with brewing area managers and technical teams to execute shift-based responsibilities, including equipment preparation, process monitoring, and data recording. The position demands attention to detail, adherence to standard operating procedures, and proactive identification of operational issues. Successful candidates will contribute to plant reliability, product quality, and team performance in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

This role is ideal for individuals with a technical background or interest in process operations within the beverage manufacturing industry. Nile Breweries offers structured training and on-the-job coaching to develop competencies in brewing science, equipment operation, and quality control. The position plays a vital part in delivering consistent beer production while upholding the highest standards of safety and hygiene.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend daily safety briefings to review incidents, near-misses, and identify potential risks in the brewing area.
  • Review MES and digital brew sheets from the previous shift to understand process status and equipment conditions.
  • Receive shift handovers with updates on process parameters, equipment status, and any outstanding actions.
  • Perform deep cleaning, inspection, and lubrication of brewing equipment following standardized procedures.
  • Apply 5S principles to maintain organization, cleanliness, and efficiency in the work area.
  • Identify and report defects, leaks, or unsafe conditions to supervisors or maintenance teams promptly.
  • Conduct Autonomous Maintenance (ATO) tasks including routine checks and minor adjustments on equipment.
  • Monitor and control key brewing parameters such as temperature, pressure, and flow rates in Brewhouse, Cellars, and Filtration areas.
  • Perform Apparent Extract (AE) and Original Extract (OE) analysis using laboratory equipment and record results accurately.
  • Conduct regular beer, tank, colour, and volume analysis as per the established sampling schedule.
  • Perform frontline problem solving when deviations occur, using basic troubleshooting techniques before escalation.
  • Monitor fermentation vessel conditions including temperature, pressure, and yeast activity to ensure optimal fermentation.
  • Execute Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) procedures for tanks, vessels, and pipelines to maintain hygiene standards.
  • Remove trub from fermentation vessels and conduct decanter bypass analysis during brewing operations.
  • Run CIP systems during double brewhouse downtime to maximize equipment utilization and readiness.
  • Start, monitor, and shut down steam systems safely, ensuring proper pressure and temperature control.
  • Monitor equipment performance and report any deviations, unusual noises, or performance drops to supervisors.
  • Ensure proper handover of responsibilities, including documentation of completed tasks and pending issues.
  • Coordinate raw material availability and process orders with logistics and planning teams to avoid production delays.
  • Perform basic maintenance tasks such as valve replacements, gasket changes, and equipment inspections under guidance.
  • Conduct routine plant walkabouts to detect early signs of wear, leaks, or abnormal conditions.
  • Respond quickly to process alarms or deviations, initiating initial corrective actions before escalation.
  • Escalate unresolved filtration or brewhouse issues to relevant technical or engineering teams for resolution.
  • Capture lab results, filtration data, and tank levels into the Manufacturing Execution System (MES) accurately and on time.
  • Track and verify key performance indicators including beer loss, plant availability, and process deviations.
  • Use problem-solving tools such as PFR, 5 Whys, and PTCA to analyze root causes of recurring issues.
  • Coordinate with artisans, specialists, or suppliers to resolve technical problems beyond frontline capability.
  • Receive daily coaching from Brewing Area Managers to improve operational knowledge and decision-making.
  • Assist peers with troubleshooting and support process improvement initiatives during shifts.
  • Participate in weekend and off-shift safety pillar reviews to reinforce safety culture and hazard awareness.
  • Lead or support safety and efficiency initiatives such as 5S audits, hazard elimination, and near-miss reporting.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with passes in Mathematics, English, and a Science subject.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a manufacturing, processing, or industrial environment.
  • Basic understanding of brewing processes or beverage production is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Ability to read and interpret process diagrams, work instructions, and safety signs.
  • Proficiency in using basic measuring instruments such as thermometers, pressure gauges, and hydrometers.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays as required.
  • Basic computer literacy for data entry into MES and accessing digital work instructions.

Desirable

  • Certificate or diploma in Brewing Technology, Food Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Previous experience in a brewery, beverage plant, or food processing facility.
  • Knowledge of CIP systems, steam systems, and pressure vessel operations.
  • Familiarity with quality control parameters such as pH, gravity, bitterness, and colour in beer.
  • Experience with root cause analysis tools and participation in continuous improvement activities.
  • Basic understanding of HACCP, GMP, and food safety standards in beverage production.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly with colleagues.
