The Post Bus Driver is responsible for the safe operation of postal vehicles, adherence to schedules, and the protection of mail and passenger welfare. This position demands professionalism, vigilance, and a strong commitment to public service. Drivers serve as the frontline representatives of Posta Uganda in communities across the region.
Ideal applicants will possess the necessary commercial driving qualifications and a proven record of safe vehicle operation. Key Responsibilities
- Operate the Post Bus safely along designated routes while obeying all traffic laws and postal service regulations.
- Conduct daily pre-trip inspections of the vehicle, checking oil, fuel, tires, lights, brakes, and safety equipment.
- Maintain accurate logs of mileage, fuel consumption, journey times, and any incidents or mechanical issues encountered.
- Ensure the security and confidentiality of all mail items and assist passengers with special needs, including the elderly and disabled.
- Keep the bus clean and secure after each shift, liaising with the conductor on broker and authority relations as required.
- Complete and sign the Daily Bus Return form and submit it to the supervisor immediately upon returning to headquarters.
- Respond promptly to emergencies by providing first aid or coordinating assistance while prioritizing passenger safety.
- Adhere to scheduled timetables to guarantee timely mail delivery and passenger transport across all assigned routes.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Hold a valid Ugandan driver’s license with classes CE, D, D1, DIE, or DE authorizing operation of heavy passenger vehicles.
- Possess a current passenger bus driver’s badge issued by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
- Demonstrate at least two years of verifiable experience driving buses or similar large commercial vehicles.
- Have a clean driving record with no major traffic violations or accidents in the past three years.
- Be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to complete logs and interact with passengers and officials.
- Pass a medical examination confirming fitness to operate commercial passenger vehicles safely.
Desirable
- Previous experience working in a government or parastatal transport division is advantageous.
- Knowledge of basic vehicle mechanics helps in identifying early signs of mechanical problems during inspections.
- Familiarity with Kampala’s traffic patterns and suburban routes improves schedule adherence and efficiency.
- Training in defensive driving or passenger safety enhances ability to manage risks on the road.
- Ability to speak Luganda or other local languages improves communication with diverse passenger groups.
- Experience handling cash or valuables in a transport context supports mail security responsibilities.
