Job Overview

SpeedCom Africa is seeking seven Regional Team Leaders to oversee the MTN Mobile Money Merchant Quality and Retention project across Uganda. In this role you will direct field teams, ensure targets are met, and drive merchant satisfaction.

You will build weekly roadmaps, coach agents in the field, verify visits and reactivation claims, and own reporting for your region. Leadership, analytical skills, and a valid driving licence are essential to succeed in this dynamic position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and publish weekly field team roadmaps that align with MTN Mobile Money targets and ensure every scheduled route is actually worked.
  • Coach TDRs in the field by riding along, listening to pitches, providing immediate feedback, and correcting techniques to improve merchant engagement.
  • Verify all field activities including visits, branding photos, and reactivation claims before they are submitted as reports to maintain data integrity.
  • Train and certify new TDRs using the cascade model after completing MTN MoMo training, ensuring consistent knowledge transfer across the region.
  • Own daily, weekly, and monthly performance reporting for your region, guaranteeing accuracy and timeliness while standing behind the numbers presented to MTN.
  • Manage escalations within agreed service windows, keep MTN regional teams informed, and resolve issues promptly to maintain strong partner relationships.
  • Execute ground level campaigns and merchant incentives on schedule, covering the entire region to drive reactivation and retention.
  • Monitor team attendance, discipline, and performance, addressing concerns quickly and fairly to sustain high productivity levels.
  • Collaborate with MTN regional managers to share insights, adjust strategies, and ensure alignment between field operations and corporate objectives.
  • Conduct regular field audits to verify compliance with branding standards, transaction processes, and customer service expectations for MTN Mobile Money services.
  • Prepare and present performance dashboards that highlight trends, enabling swift tactical changes to weekly plans based on data insights.
  • Foster a supportive team environment by mentoring TDRs, recognizing achievements, and encouraging continuous skill development.
  • Ensure all field team members adhere to MTN’s code of conduct, promptly addressing any violations to uphold professional standards.
  • Leverage local market knowledge to tailor merchant engagement strategies that resonate with community needs and increase uptake.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • A degree or diploma in business, marketing, or a related field from a recognised institution.
  • Minimum four years of experience in field sales, with at least two years leading a field team or supervising sales agents.
  • Proven ability to read performance dashboards and adjust weekly plans based on data trends and field observations.
  • Valid Ugandan driving licence and willingness to be based in the assigned region while travelling extensively across it.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to handle discipline, attendance issues, and team member queries with fairness and consistency.
  • Experience working with MTN Mobile Money, telecom, or FMCG distribution channels is highly advantageous for immediate impact.
  • Ability to train and certify new TDRs under the cascade model, ensuring they meet MTN MoMo standards before deployment.
  • Commitment to achieving reactivation and retention targets while maintaining high standards of merchant quality and service.
  • Demonstrated success in achieving sales or retention targets in competitive, fast‑moving consumer goods environments.
  • Capacity to work under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results within tight deadlines without compromising quality.

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a Pan African marketing or below the line consultancy environment.
  • Familiarity with MTN’s regional structure and key performance indicators used for merchant quality assessment.
  • Strong analytical mindset with proficiency in Excel or similar tools for data tracking and reporting.
  • Experience designing and implementing field incentive programmes that boost merchant activity and retention.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both field teams and senior stakeholders, presenting complex information clearly.
  • Willingness to mentor junior leaders and contribute to the continuous improvement of field operations processes.
  • Knowledge of mobile money regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements relevant to Ugandan financial services.
  • Experience using CRM or field management software to track agent performance and customer interactions.

What the Role Offers

  • Ongoing professional development through MTN-sponsored training programmes and SpeedCom Africa internal workshops.
  • Clear career progression path within SpeedCom Africa, with opportunities to move into senior management roles.
