Job Overview

Welthungerhilfe seeks a Sector Advisor Food Systems & Climate Resilience in Kampala to lead climate-smart food systems interventions across Uganda. This role drives sustainable agriculture and resilience strategies in vulnerable communities.

The advisor will work closely with government partners and local NGOs to strengthen food systems, enhance climate adaptation, and promote nutrition security. This is a critical position in Uganda’s development landscape.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of environmental screening tools for all food systems projects across Uganda’s sub-regions.
• Conduct comprehensive climate vulnerability and risk analyses to inform project planning and resource allocation decisions.
• Develop climate resilience strategies that integrate food systems strengthening with adaptation measures for vulnerable communities.
• Coordinate with government ministries and local partners to ensure alignment of food systems interventions with national climate policies.
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of climate resilience interventions in food systems, producing evidence-based reports for stakeholders.
• Provide technical guidance and training to project teams on climate-smart agriculture practices and food systems approaches.
• Build partnerships with research institutions and development agencies to advance innovation in climate-resilient food systems.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Master’s degree in agriculture, environmental science, development studies, climate change, or a related field from a recognized institution.
• Minimum of five years of professional experience in food systems, climate resilience, or sustainable agriculture programming in developing countries.
• Proven track record of leading environmental screening processes and climate risk assessments for development projects.
• Strong analytical skills with demonstrated ability to interpret climate data and vulnerability assessments for programmatic decision-making.
• Excellent coordination skills with experience working across multidisciplinary teams and managing complex stakeholder relationships.

Desirable

• PhD in a relevant field with research focus on climate resilience and food systems transformation in East Africa.
• Previous experience working with German development organizations or international NGOs in Uganda or the East African region.
• Publications in peer-reviewed journals on climate adaptation, food security, or sustainable agriculture systems.
• Fluency in local Ugandan languages, particularly Luganda or Runyankore, to facilitate community engagement.
