Job Overview

Marie Stopes Uganda seeks a dedicated Maintenance Assistant to support fleet operations and equipment upkeep. This role reports to the Maintenance Supervisor and focuses on ensuring vehicle safety and reliability through routine inspections and timely repairs. The position is vital for maintaining compliance with organizational maintenance plans and supporting service delivery across Uganda.

Working within the engineering team, the Maintenance Assistant will contribute to the smooth functioning of MSUG’s fleet, which is essential for reaching communities with healthcare services. The role involves hands-on mechanical work, data management, and collaboration with team members to uphold high standards of vehicle performance and safety.

The successful candidate will help ensure that vehicles are always ready for deployment, directly supporting Marie Stopes Uganda’s mission to provide reproductive health services nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct routine vehicle inspections to assess condition, identify wear, and ensure compliance with safety standards before deployment.
• Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on the MSUG fleet according to approved maintenance plans and manufacturer guidelines.
• Diagnose and resolve mechanical issues promptly, minimizing downtime and ensuring vehicles remain operational for field operations.
• Maintain accurate records in the Fleet Management Information System (FMIS), including service history, parts used, and maintenance activities.
• Monitor maintenance costs and parts consumption, providing data to support budget tracking and cost-efficiency initiatives.
• Report incidents, accidents, or vehicle defects immediately to the Maintenance Supervisor following established procedures.
• Generate fleet performance reports on vehicle availability, utilization, and maintenance trends to support decision-making.
• Provide general support to the maintenance team, including workshop organization, tool management, and assisting senior technicians as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Ordinary Diploma in Automotive Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution in Uganda.
• Minimum of two years of hands-on experience in fleet management, motor vehicle repairs, or automotive maintenance workshops.
• Proficiency in using computers for data entry, maintenance tracking systems, and basic office applications like MS Office.
• Valid driver’s license for light vehicles, demonstrating ability to operate and test vehicles safely after repairs.
• Strong understanding of vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems commonly found in service fleets.

Desirable

• Experience working with NGO or humanitarian organization fleets, understanding the unique demands of field operations in diverse terrains.
• Knowledge of Fleet Management Information Systems (FMIS) or similar computerized maintenance management software.
• Training in occupational health and safety practices, particularly related to workshop environments and hazardous material handling.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, to support emergency repairs or urgent fleet needs.
• Certification in specific vehicle brands or systems commonly used in the Ugandan market, such as Toyota, Isuzu, or Ford.
