NARO – Vaccines and Pharmaceuticals Centre is seeking three Senior Technicians to manage critical machinery across its manufacturing and laboratory facilities. This role ensures operational continuity by maintaining bioreactors, centrifuges, and automated inspection systems.

Based at the NVPC campus in Nakyesasa, off the Gayaza-Zirobwe Road, these positions are contract-based and report directly to the SPRO for Air Quality Control. The successful candidates will play a pivotal role in supporting Uganda’s agricultural and pharmaceutical advancement through reliable equipment performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute scheduled routine checks, servicing, and calibrations on bioreactors, centrifuges, conveyors, robots, and inspection machines to meet manufacturer specifications.
  • Devise and implement preventive maintenance strategies to minimize unscheduled machine downtime and extend asset lifespan across all production lines.
  • Maintain meticulous digital and physical records of every service event, including parts replaced, labor hours, and performance metrics for audit compliance.
  • Analyze machine test results and make real-time adjustments to ensure equipment operates within optimal temperature, pressure, and speed parameters.
  • Organize and log spare parts, consumables, and specialized tool kits required for upkeep, ensuring inventory accuracy and accessibility.
  • Log daily service activities into the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and update equipment manuals to reflect modifications.
  • Provide immediate repair interventions during critical equipment failures to restore production schedules and prevent safety hazards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align maintenance schedules with production targets and quality assurance protocols.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Diploma or Higher National Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation Engineering from a recognized Ugandan institution.
  • At least three years of hands-on experience maintaining industrial machinery, preferably in pharmaceutical, biotech, or agricultural processing environments.
  • Proven ability to read technical schematics, interpret calibration certificates, and use diagnostic tools such as multimeters and vibration analyzers.
  • Strong attention to detail with demonstrated record-keeping skills and familiarity with CMMS software or spreadsheet-based tracking systems.

Desirable

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field combined with additional certifications in safety management.
  • Experience working in GMP-regulated facilities or with automated bioreactor systems such as Sartorius or GE HyPerforma.
  • Certification in ISO 13485 or ISO 9001 quality management standards, indicating exposure to controlled environments.
  • Previous supervisory experience leading small maintenance teams or coordinating shift-based service schedules.

What the Role Offers

  • Competitive contractual salary with performance-based bonuses tied to equipment uptime and maintenance efficiency metrics.
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage for the employee and immediate dependents, including outpatient and inpatient services.
  • Housing allowance or company-provided accommodation options near the Nakyesasa campus for convenience and reduced commute time.
  • Daily lunch provision and transport reimbursement for field interventions beyond the main facility perimeter.
  • Access to continuous professional development programs, including training on advanced calibration techniques and safety protocols.
