Job Overview

J. Samuel Richards & Associates is recruiting on behalf of a leading security services company in Uganda for an experienced Credit Controller to oversee credit management, debt recovery, and receivables performance. The role is pivotal in converting outstanding invoices into cash while maintaining healthy customer relationships and credit discipline.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Credit Controller will lead a small collections team, implement credit policies, and provide weekly cash forecasts. Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, negotiation ability, and a proactive approach to minimizing bad debt and maximizing revenue protection.

The Credit Controller will work closely with cross-functional teams to align credit policies with business objectives, ensuring that risk mitigation strategies support sustainable growth while protecting the company’s bottom line.

Key Responsibilities

The following responsibilities outline the core duties expected of the Credit Controller, focusing on policy implementation, debt recovery, risk assessment, and team leadership to drive timely cash conversion and minimize bad-debt exposure.

  • Implement the approved credit policy across customer onboarding, credit limit setting, invoicing, collections, escalation procedures, provisioning, and write-off processes to ensure consistency and compliance.
  • Maintain a reconciled debtor ageing report up to 180+ days, delivering weekly collection activity summaries and cash flow forecasts to senior finance management.
  • Lead debtor follow-up activities, negotiate payment plans, track promise-to-pay commitments, and develop targeted recovery plans for top-tier delinquent accounts.
  • Resolve billing and service disputes by coordinating with Finance, Sales, and Operations teams, ensuring accurate documentation and complete customer credit files are maintained.
  • Assess customer credit risk using financial statements, trade references, and payment history to recommend appropriate credit limits, deposits, guarantees, or cash-before-service terms.
  • Prepare evidence-based provisions and write-off recommendations, compile legal recovery packs, and supervise collection staff to ensure adherence to recovery timelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor key performance indicators such as days sales outstanding, collection effectiveness index, and bad-debt ratio, providing actionable insights to improve credit control efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with Ugandan tax regulations, VAT documentation standards, and financial reporting requirements, liaising with external auditors and regulatory bodies as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

Candidates must meet the following essential qualifications the minimum educational background, experience, and technical competencies required to perform the Credit Controller role effectively.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, or a closely related field from a recognized university.
  • Minimum of five years’ progressive experience in credit control, receivables management, collections, revenue assurance, or commercial finance within a medium to large enterprise.
  • Proven track record managing large debtor portfolios, preparing accurate ageing analyses, and developing effective recovery plans that reduce overdue balances.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced functions, pivot tables, VLOOKUP) and experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Tally Prime, or comparable ERP systems.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with customers, internal teams, and external agencies to resolve disputes and secure payments.

Desirable

While not mandatory, the following desirable qualifications and experiences can strengthen a candidate’s application and are valued for bringing additional expertise to the credit control function.

  • CPA Uganda certification or active progress toward a professional accounting qualification such as ACCA, CIMA, or ICAEW.
  • Credit management certification from a recognized institute, demonstrating specialized knowledge in credit risk assessment and debt recovery strategies.
  • Prior experience working in the security services, facilities management, logistics, utilities, telecoms, construction, or contract-based services sectors.
  • Experience with statutory deductions, PAYE, NSSF contributions, and familiarity with Uganda Revenue Authority reporting requirements.
  • Ability to mentor and train junior credit controllers or collections officers, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the credit function.
