Job Overview

Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) is seeking a dedicated Electrical Technician to join its Network Operations and Maintenance team. This role is critical in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of Uganda’s high-voltage transmission infrastructure. The successful candidate will report directly to the Maintenance Engineer (Substations) and will be responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of substation equipment across the national grid. As a key member of the technical team, the Electrical Technician will play a vital role in maintaining operational continuity and supporting UETCL’s vision to be Eastern Africa’s leading electricity transmission company. The position requires a blend of technical expertise, practical experience, and a strong commitment to safety and environmental standards in all maintenance activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on high-voltage substation equipment including transformers, switchgear, AVRs, and auxiliary systems to ensure optimal performance.
• Perform corrective maintenance tasks on transformers, switchgears, and other electrical equipment to address identified faults and prevent system failures.
• Manage inventory of replacement parts and tools, ensuring all necessary supplies are readily available for scheduled and emergency maintenance activities.
• Coordinate maintenance schedules with the engineering team to minimize downtime and maintain operational efficiency across the transmission network.
• Document and report on all maintenance activities, including repairs conducted, inspections completed, and any deviations from standard procedures.
• Respond promptly to emergency outages and equipment failures, working under pressure to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.
• Ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and environmental standards in all maintenance activities, protecting both personnel and the surrounding environment.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support system upgrades, new installations, and technical improvements across the substation network.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• National Diploma or Higher Diploma in Electrical or Electromechanical Engineering from a recognized institution.
• At least two years of relevant experience in maintaining high-voltage power transformers and switchgear within a utility or industrial setting.
• Specialized training in high-voltage equipment maintenance, safety protocols, and electrical testing procedures.

Desirable

• Additional certifications in electrical safety, substation maintenance, or power systems engineering.
• Experience working with SCADA systems or substation automation equipment.
• Proven track record of emergency response and outage restoration in a transmission environment.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to operate heavy maintenance equipment and specialized testing tools.
