Job Overview

Carrefour Uganda is seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented Quality & Hygiene Control Officer to join our growing team. This pivotal role ensures that all food products handled across our stores meet the highest standards of safety, hygiene, and quality. You will be the guardian of our brand promise, protecting both our customers and our reputation. As a key member of our operations team, you will work directly with store managers, suppliers, and logistics personnel to enforce rigorous control protocols. Your sharp eye for detail and proactive approach will be instrumental in maintaining compliance with both local regulations and international Carrefour standards across all Ugandan outlets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily inspections of food storage areas, preparation zones, and display sections to ensure strict hygiene compliance across all Carrefour Uganda locations.
  • Monitor and document temperature controls for refrigerated and frozen goods, taking immediate corrective action when deviations are detected.
  • Develop and deliver targeted training sessions for store staff on food safety protocols, personal hygiene standards, and proper handling procedures.
  • Investigate customer complaints related to product quality or hygiene concerns, providing detailed reports and implementing preventive measures.
  • Perform regular audits of supplier deliveries, verifying documentation, packaging integrity, and adherence to specified quality benchmarks before acceptance.
  • Maintain comprehensive inspection logs, incident reports, and corrective action records to demonstrate continuous compliance during regulatory visits.
  • Collaborate with procurement teams to establish clear quality specifications for all new product introductions and seasonal inventory additions.
  • Respond swiftly to food safety emergencies, coordinating containment efforts and communicating effectively with management and regulatory bodies.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Microbiology, or a closely related scientific discipline from a recognized Ugandan university or equivalent international institution.
  • Certification in food safety management systems such as HACCP, ISO 22000, or FSSC 22000 from an accredited training provider.
  • Minimum of 0 to 2 years of hands-on experience in quality control, food safety auditing, or hygiene management within retail, hospitality, or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong understanding of Ugandan food safety regulations, including those enforced by the Ministry of Health and the Uganda National Bureau of Standards.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and the ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced retail setting.

Desirable

  • Previous experience working within a multinational retail environment, particularly in supermarket or hypermarket settings across East Africa.
  • Additional certifications in food safety auditing, internal auditing, or occupational health and safety management systems.
  • Fluency in Luganda or other local Ugandan languages to facilitate effective communication with store-level staff during inspections and training sessions.
  • Familiarity with Carrefour’s internal quality management systems and supplier compliance frameworks would provide immediate operational advantage.
  • Experience using digital inspection tools, quality management software, or mobile data collection applications for audit documentation and reporting.

What the Role Offers

  • Competitive monthly salary with performance-based bonuses tied to quality audit scores and compliance achievements.
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage including medical, dental, and vision benefits for you and your immediate family members.
  • Company-provided housing allowance or accommodation support, particularly valuable for employees relocating from other regions of Uganda.
  • Monthly transport allowance to cover commute costs between Carrefour’s central distribution facilities and retail store locations across Kampala and surrounding areas.
  • Subsidized lunch provided at all Carrefour Uganda locations, featuring nutritious meals that meet our own food safety standards.
  • Structured professional development opportunities including funded training courses, workshops, and certification renewals in food safety and quality management.
  • Clear career progression pathway with potential advancement to senior quality management positions or regional coordination roles within the Carrefour Africa network.
