Job Overview

Twyford Impex is seeking a qualified Factory Medical Officer or Factory Nurse to join their manufacturing facility in Luwero. This role is critical to maintaining employee health and safety standards within the factory environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the on-site clinic and providing immediate medical response to workplace incidents.

The Factory Medical Officer will operate under Uganda’s Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Factories (First-Aid Personnel) Rules. This position requires clinical expertise combined with the ability to respond calmly to emergencies in an industrial setting. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate first aid and emergency medical care for workplace injuries including cuts, burns, fractures, and chemical exposures.
  • Assess injury severity and determine if external medical facility treatment is required for proper employee care.
  • Coordinate with ambulance services and hospitals for serious cases needing hospitalisation or medical evacuation.
  • Respond to medical emergencies such as fainting, seizures, cardiac events, and sudden illnesses on factory premises.
  • Treat minor workplace injuries through wound cleaning, suturing, dressing, and administration of basic medications.
  • Manage common occupational health issues like muscle strains, eye irritations, heat exhaustion, and dermatitis cases.
  • Administer prescribed and over-the-counter medications according to standing orders and medical protocols.
  • Monitor employee recovery from injuries and assess fitness for duty before returning to work.
  • Maintain factory clinic supplies, first aid kits, and ensure all medical equipment is properly stocked and functional.
  • Keep accurate medical records of all treatments, incidents, and employee health visits in compliance with regulations.
  • Promote employee health and safety through education programs and preventive care initiatives in the workplace.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Valid Diploma or Degree in Nursing, Clinical Medicine, or Medical Officer training from a recognised Ugandan institution.
  • Current and active licence to practice with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council or Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.
  • Minimum two years of clinical experience preferably in emergency care, occupational health, or industrial settings.
  • Proven ability to handle medical emergencies, trauma cases, and provide calm, effective crisis management under pressure.
  • Knowledge of Uganda’s Occupational Safety and Health Act and Factories (First-Aid Personnel) Rules compliance requirements.
  • Strong record-keeping skills with experience maintaining accurate medical logs, incident reports, and clinic inventory systems.

Desirable

  • Additional certification in occupational health, industrial medicine, or workplace safety management.
  • Experience working in manufacturing, factory, or industrial environments with understanding of workplace hazards.
  • Training in advanced first aid, CPR instruction, or emergency medical response techniques beyond basic certification.
  • Familiarity with common chemical exposures in tile manufacturing and appropriate treatment protocols for such incidents.
  • Ability to conduct health education sessions and safety training for factory workers on health and wellness topics.
  • Experience with medical evacuation coordination and establishing relationships with local hospitals and emergency services.
