Job Overview

Nakasero Hospital seeks a skilled Revenue Assurance Accountant to join their finance team in Kampala. This role focuses on protecting hospital revenue through accurate billing, claims management and debt collection. The position plays a vital role in ensuring financial sustainability for quality healthcare delivery.

The Revenue Assurance Accountant will work closely with clinical departments and external payers to prevent revenue leakage. You will oversee the accounts receivable process from patient admission to final payment collection. This is an opportunity to contribute to a leading private hospital’s mission of providing accessible medical care.

Working in Nakasero Hospital’s finance department, you will ensure timely submission of insurance claims and accurate recording of all receipts. The role requires strong analytical skills and attention to detail to maintain healthy cash flow. Your efforts will directly support the hospital’s ability to invest in medical equipment and staff training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily billing operations ensuring all patient services are accurately charged and invoiced within 24 hours of service delivery.
  • Prepare and submit insurance claims to all major providers following up on status and resolving any rejections or discrepancies promptly.
  • Monitor debt ageing reports weekly identifying overdue accounts and initiating appropriate collection procedures to minimize bad debt exposure.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations between hospital financial system and insurer payments to ensure all revenue is properly recorded and accounted for.
  • Collaborate with clinical departments to verify service documentation supports billing codes and prevents claim denials due to insufficient information.
  • Analyze payment trends and patient financial characteristics to develop strategies that improve collection rates and reduce outstanding balances.
  • Maintain strict adherence to hospital financial policies and Ugandan accounting standards ensuring all transactions are properly authorized and documented.
  • Generate weekly revenue reports for hospital management highlighting key performance indicators and areas requiring immediate attention.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting Finance or related field from a recognized university with strong academic performance demonstrated through transcripts.
  • Full CPA Uganda certification or equivalent professional accounting qualification with current membership in good standing.
  • Minimum three years progressive experience in accounting roles within healthcare busy corporate environments or similar service industries.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel including pivot tables VLOOKUP and complex financial modeling for data analysis and reporting.
  • Proven experience using ERP systems preferably SAP Oracle or similar for managing accounts receivable and general ledger functions.

Desirable

  • Completed or ongoing Master’s degree in Accounting Finance Business Administration or related field showing commitment to professional growth.
  • Specific experience in hospital medical insurance billing or third-party payer reimbursement systems within Ugandan or East African context.
  • Knowledge of Uganda Revenue Authority tax regulations and NHIF guidelines affecting healthcare provider billing and reimbursement processes.
  • Experience with healthcare-specific software systems such as HMIS or specialized medical billing platforms used in private hospitals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to communicate financial concepts clearly to non-finance clinical and administrative staff members.
