Job Overview
Darling Uganda is seeking a dedicated Health, Safety and Environment Coordinator to join their manufacturing team in Uganda. This full-time position plays a vital role in ensuring workplace safety, environmental compliance and regulatory adherence across all factory operations. The successful candidate will support the implementation of effective HSE management systems while promoting a culture of safety and sustainability.
The HSE Coordinator will work closely with management, employees and external stakeholders to develop, implement and monitor health, safety and environmental policies. This role requires proactive hazard identification, risk assessment and the promotion of safe working practices throughout the facility. The position contributes directly to minimizing workplace incidents and environmental impact.
Reporting to the HSE Manager, the coordinator will be responsible for planning training programs, conducting inspections, managing emergency response procedures and ensuring compliance with local and national regulations. This is an excellent opportunity for a safety professional to make a meaningful impact in a growing manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan coordinate and implement effective HSE policies guidelines and procedures aligned with company goals and objectives
- Ensure all staff and visitors observe HSE regulations wear required safety equipment and follow safe working practices
- Maintain proper risk emergency plans and ensure their implementation across all factory areas
- Assist Quality Assurance in conducting training needs assessments and delivering occupational health and safety training
- Oversee proper waste management practices ensuring compliance with local and national environmental regulations
- Monitor factory compliance with Environmental Health Safety and Local Government Regulations
- Support internal and external environmental audits and implement recommended corrective actions
- Coordinate emergency response activities and administer first aid when required
- Investigate HSE standard violations and recommend preventive measures
- Plan and conduct HSE training for all employees in liaison with Human Resources Manager
- Monitor Effluent Treatment Plant daily operations and ensure proper maintenance
- Liaise with managers employees community contacts and local municipal authorities on HSE matters
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Bachelors degree in Occupational Health and Safety Environmental Science or related field
- Minimum 3 years experience as HSE Officer or Coordinator in manufacturing or industrial setting
- Knowledge of Ugandan OSH Act National Environment Act and Local Government regulations
- Proven ability to conduct risk assessments accident investigations and safety training
- Strong communication skills for delivering training and liaising with diverse stakeholders
Desirable
- Professional certification such as NEBOSH IOSH or equivalent
- Experience with ISO 14001 ISO 45001 or OHSAS 18001 management systems
- Background in food processing or consumer goods manufacturing industry
- Skills in effluent treatment plant operation and environmental monitoring
- First aid and emergency response certification
