Kampala Independent Hospital is seeking a skilled Laboratory Technician to join its diagnostic team in Kampala. The Laboratory Technician will work under supervision to ensure all procedures meet national and international standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Collect, receive, label, and prepare blood, urine, and tissue specimens for analysis following standard operating procedures.
• Perform routine hematology, biochemistry, and microbiology tests using automated and manual laboratory equipment.
• Prepare reagents, stains, and culture media accurately according to established formulas and quality control guidelines.
• Operate and monitor analyzers, centrifuges, microscopes, and incubators, ensuring proper calibration and function.
• Record test results in laboratory information systems with high accuracy and maintain proper documentation for audit trails.
• Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and promptly report malfunctions to supervisors or biomedical engineers.
• Follow internal and external quality control procedures, including running controls and participating in proficiency testing programs.
• Monitor inventory levels of reagents and consumables, initiating requisitions to prevent stockouts of critical supplies.
• Dispose of biohazardous waste and used specimens according to infection control and environmental safety regulations.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of workstations, equipment, and storage areas to support a safe and efficient laboratory environment.
• Observe strict biosafety protocols, including proper use of PPE and adherence to standard precautions when handling patient samples.
• Ensure confidentiality of all patient information and test results in compliance with data protection and hospital policies.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• A diploma or bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or Medical Laboratory Science from a recognized institution.
• Valid registration or licence with the Uganda Allied Health Professionals Council or equivalent regulatory body.
• Minimum of one year of hands-on experience in a clinical laboratory performing routine diagnostic tests.
• Demonstrated ability to follow standard operating procedures with high levels of accuracy, integrity, and attention to detail.
• Good organizational skills to manage workload, prioritize tasks, and maintain proper documentation under supervision.

Desirable

• Experience working in a private hospital or high-volume laboratory setting with exposure to diverse test menus.
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health record interfaces for result reporting.
• Knowledge of advanced techniques in hematology, coagulation, or immunoassay testing beyond basic routine procedures.
• Training in quality management systems such as ISO 15189 or experience with internal audits and corrective actions.
• Ability to train or mentor junior staff or students in laboratory techniques and safety practices.
