Job Overview

Threeways Shipping Services is seeking an experienced Business Unit Manager to lead and scale the Transtrac division’s nationwide and cross-border transport and distribution network. This role carries full profit and loss responsibility, requiring strategic oversight of revenue growth, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance across domestic and international routes. The successful candidate will drive synergy between transport and clearing & forwarding teams to ensure seamless, on-time delivery of multi-sector cargo.

Operating within Uganda’s dynamic logistics landscape, the Business Unit Manager will oversee fleet operations, last-mile distribution, and stakeholder relationships while maintaining strict adherence to local and international transport regulations. This position demands a results-driven leader capable of optimizing asset utilization, controlling costs, and mentoring a diverse team of drivers, dispatchers, and supervisors.

The role offers significant autonomy to shape the unit’s strategy and performance, with direct impact on company profitability and market expansion. Ideal candidates will possess deep expertise in transport corridor management, fleet optimization, and cross-border logistics, combined with strong financial acumen and leadership capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the business unit’s profit and loss statement, including budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance tracking to ensure sustainable revenue growth and profitability.
• Develop and execute strategic plans for scaling the nationwide and cross-border transport network, identifying new market opportunities and service enhancements.
• Oversee transportation and fleet operations, including route planning, dispatch management, and fuel/asset optimization to maximize efficiency and reduce operational costs.
• Manage local distribution networks, optimizing last-mile delivery, cross-docking procedures, and real-time tracking through TMS and WMS systems for improved visibility.
• Ensure full compliance with local and international transport regulations, health and safety standards, and customs procedures to prevent delays and penalties.
• Drive financial oversight by managing unit budgets, controlling costs, monitoring billing accuracy, and leading payment collection efforts to maintain healthy cash flow.
• Build and maintain strong stakeholder and vendor relationships, negotiating carrier contracts and collaborating with clearing & forwarding teams to eliminate transit delays.
• Lead, recruit, train, and mentor drivers, dispatchers, and operations supervisors to build a high-performing team committed to safety, reliability, and service excellence.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
• Minimum of five years progressive experience managing cross-border transport corridors and nationwide distribution networks in East Africa or similar regions.
• Proven expertise in fleet and asset optimization, including fuel management, maintenance scheduling, and utilization tracking to reduce operating expenses.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with clearing and forwarding teams to streamline documentation, reduce clearance times, and improve end-to-end delivery performance.
• Strong stakeholder management skills with experience negotiating carrier contracts, managing client relationships, and liaising with regulatory authorities.
• Proficiency in transportation management systems (TMS), warehouse management systems (WMS), and related logistics software for tracking, reporting, and operational planning.

Desirable

• Professional certification in logistics, supply chain, or transport management (e.g., CILT, APICS) is advantageous but not mandatory.
• Experience working with multi-sector cargo including perishables, industrial goods, and retail products across diverse industry verticals.
• Familiarity with Ugandan and regional transport regulations, including COMESA, EAC, and Northern Corridor transit protocols.
• Background in financial management or P&L ownership within a transport or logistics operation, showing ability to drive profitability.
• Experience implementing telematics, GPS tracking, or fleet monitoring technologies to improve safety, security, and operational efficiency.
