Job Overview
The National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U) is offering a unique opportunity for fresh graduates to join its team as Management Trainees in Systems Administration. You will be working under the supervision of senior IT professionals to support critical digital infrastructure across government data centres. This programme is ideal for those who have recently completed their studies in IT-related fields and are looking for hands-on experience. NITA-U provides a structured training pathway that blends theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring you gain valuable skills in system administration, monitoring, and technical support. The position is based in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, which is the hub of the country’s technological advancement.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the daily administration, monitoring, and maintenance of government collaboration software and data-centre infrastructure.
- Develop dashboards and operational reports to track system availability, resource utilization, incidents, and service performance metrics.
- Support the design and acquisition of proactive tools to identify errors early, ensuring efficient use of IT resources.
- Participate in staging, testing, deployment, user acceptance testing, and technical handover of applications and infrastructure services.
- Develop scripts and lightweight automation tools to improve system monitoring, reporting, data processing, and routine administrative tasks.
- Provide Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support for internal and external customers on a 24/7/365 basis.
- Assist in developing application policies and procedures, and monitor compliance with these established guidelines.
- Ensure that server operating systems, storage systems, and applications are updated with the latest patches and antivirus definitions.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related field from a recognized institution.
- Strong academic performance with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or equivalent, demonstrating technical competence and learning ability.
- Proven experience or coursework in system administration, networking fundamentals, or IT infrastructure management.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact professionally with diverse stakeholders.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and adapt to a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
- Availability to work on a rotational basis, including weekends and nights, to support 24/7/365 operations.
Desirable
- Certifications such as CompTIA A+, Network+, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, or Linux Professional Institute (LPI) certification.
- Hands-on experience with virtualization platforms like VMware, Hyper-V, or cloud services such as AWS or Microsoft Azure.
- Familiarity with scripting languages including Python, PowerShell, Bash, or VBScript for automation tasks.
- Internship or volunteer experience in an IT support role, data centre environment, or government technology department.
- Knowledge of IT service management (ITSM) frameworks such as ITIL or ISO 20000.
