Job Overview

Ardenfield is seeking a motivated Audit Trainee to join our growing assurance team in Uganda. This entry-level role offers a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced auditors on diverse client engagements across multiple industries. You will gain practical exposure to financial statement audits, internal control evaluations, and compliance with ICPAU standards while building a foundation for a long-term career in professional accounting.

The Audit Trainee will report directly to Audit Seniors and the Audit Manager, working within a collaborative and supportive environment. This position is ideal for recent graduates or those with up to one year of relevant experience who are eager to develop technical skills, attention to detail, and professional integrity in a fast-paced audit setting. Travel to client sites across Uganda will be a regular part of the role.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in executing audit assignments for a portfolio of clients under the supervision of senior team members.
• Obtain and document an understanding of client business operations, industry context, and internal control environments.
• Perform audit testing procedures including verification of assets, liabilities, income, and expense transactions.
• Prepare and maintain accurate, well-organized audit working papers that clearly document procedures, findings, and conclusions.
• Identify and report inconsistencies, errors, or unusual transactions to senior auditors for further investigation and resolution.
• Support the evaluation of internal control systems and highlight operational weaknesses with actionable recommendations.
• Participate in physical stock counts, field audits, and client site visits as scheduled by the audit team.
• Assist in drafting financial statements, audit reports, and management letters in compliance with applicable standards.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration, Economics, or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
• Recent graduate or up to one year of relevant work experience in accounting, auditing, or financial services.
• Strong foundational knowledge of basic accounting principles, auditing standards, and financial reporting frameworks.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with advanced skills in Excel for data analysis, pivot tables, and audit documentation.
• Excellent analytical, numerical, and problem-solving abilities with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with clients and team members.

Desirable

• Progression in a professional accounting qualification such as ACCA, CPA, or ICPAU certification is highly valued.
• Experience with accounting software including QuickBooks, Sage, or Microsoft Dynamics and basic data analysis tools.
• Previous internship, volunteer audit work, or participation in university accounting clubs demonstrates initiative.
• Flexibility to travel to regional client sites across Uganda for fieldwork assignments as required.
• Commitment to lifelong learning and pursuit of a career in external audit, assurance, or financial advisory.
