Job Overview
NEPTUNE SOFTWARE LTD is recruiting an Associate Software Engineer (Java Programmer) to join its engineering team in Kampala, Uganda. The successful candidate will contribute to enterprise and mobile application projects that serve clients across the region. This is a full time, entry level position suited to recent graduates and early-career developers.
The role sits within a collaborative engineering environment where junior developers work alongside senior engineers to design, build, test, and maintain high quality software solutions. Day to day work involves backend services, REST integrations, database interactions, and support for mobile products. Candidates should be eager to learn modern frameworks and adopt industry best practices.
Working hours are standard, eight to five, Monday through Friday, based at the company offices in Kampala. The position reports to senior engineering leadership and offers exposure to the full software development lifecycle. It is an excellent opportunity to build a long term career in Java development.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain Java based backend services for enterprise applications.
- Build and consume RESTful APIs to integrate internal systems and third party platforms.
- Contribute to mobile application development projects using Java and supporting frameworks.
- Write clean, well structured, and documented code that meets internal quality standards.
- Participate in code reviews and pair programming sessions with senior engineers.
- Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve defects reported during testing or production support.
- Collaborate with product managers and designers to translate requirements into technical tasks.
- Maintain and update technical documentation for all assigned modules and services.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related field.
- Minimum of two years of hands on experience in Java development, including academic or internship work.
- Solid understanding of object oriented programming principles and common design patterns.
- Familiarity with Spring or Spring Boot frameworks for building enterprise applications.
- Working knowledge of relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle.
- Strong written and spoken English communication skills for team collaboration.
Desirable
- Experience with RESTful web services, JSON, and XML data interchange formats.
- Exposure to Android or cross platform mobile development using Java or related tools.
- Familiarity with version control systems, particularly Git and GitHub workflows.
- Understanding of unit testing frameworks such as JUnit and integration testing practices.
- Knowledge of containerisation concepts, Docker, and basic cloud deployment workflows.
