Job Overview

Amazima Ministries is seeking a Director of Finance and Human Resources to work directly with office staff, directors, and other employees. This position is based in Jinja, Uganda. The Director of Finance & Human Resources is to work directly with office staff, directors, and other employees at The Amazima School and Amazima Ministries International.

Standard office and operating hours are kept. As a Director you will be expected to uphold a high standard of care, cooperation, organization, and attitude in the workplace while exhibiting Amazima’s values. This position is based in Jinja, Uganda.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Finance team consisting of two direct reports and two indirect reports to ensure efficient departmental operations.
  • Oversee the recording, classifying and summarizing of accounting transactions in Sage Intacct in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for all financial reporting and record-keeping activities.
  • Review and approve all payments, ensuring proper documentation and authorization before disbursement of funds.
  • Review & approve balance sheet account reconciliations monthly to maintain accurate financial statements.
  • Oversee the month-end close process, ensuring checklists are followed and deadlines are met consistently.
  • Ensure monthly Budget vs Actual reporting and variance analysis is provided to each department by the Finance team.
  • Provide monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to Stateside Finance team for consolidation and review.
  • Provide monthly reporting to the Managing Director on key financial performance indicators and operational metrics.
  • Guide the team with resolving complex accounting inquiries and transactions requiring specialized knowledge.
  • Review & process payroll monthly for all staff, ensuring compliance with Ugandan labor laws and tax regulations.
  • Attend annual external audit entry and exit meetings for both Ugandan entities and ensure recommendations are resolved and implemented timely.
  • Oversee Internal Audit component of the team and ensure the lead is supported in conducting effective internal reviews.
  • Oversee annual forecasting and budgeting process for Ugandan entities, coordinating input from all department heads.
  • Build relationships with all of Amazima’s departments and guide them on Finance processes to promote financial literacy and compliance.
  • Act as primary liaison with Stateside Finance team, including but not limited to, financial reporting, payments to be made out of the US entity.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field from a recognized university.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting roles, with at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Proven experience managing human resources functions including recruitment, employee relations, and performance management.
  • Proficiency in Sage Intacct or similar enterprise accounting software with strong technical accounting skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of Ugandan tax laws, labor regulations, and financial reporting requirements for NGOs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, or equivalent qualification demonstrating advanced expertise.
  • Experience working in an international NGO or faith-based organization with cross-border financial operations.
  • Familiarity with US GAAP and experience preparing financial statements for international consolidation.
  • Knowledge of payroll processing systems and experience managing multi-currency payroll for international staff.
  • Experience with budgeting and forecasting software beyond basic Excel, such as Adaptive Insights or similar tools.
  • Previous exposure to internal audit functions or experience working with external auditors on annual financial audits.
