Job Overview

The Youth Social Advocacy Team (YSAT) is recruiting two Education Project Officers to support the implementation of the Learning through Play (LtP) curriculum in Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement. This role focuses on strengthening early childhood and primary education through innovative, play-based teaching approaches. Officers will work directly with teachers, parents, and community structures to improve learning outcomes for refugee and host community children.

YSAT is a refugee-led non-governmental organization dedicated to empowering conflict-affected youth by addressing barriers to quality education, sustainable livelihoods, and peacebuilding. The organization operates in displacement settings across Uganda, with a strong presence in Kiryandongo. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to meaningful educational change in a challenging yet impactful environment.

The successful candidates will be responsible for training teachers, supervising classroom implementation, distributing learning materials, and engaging communities in support of playful learning. This is a field-based role requiring regular travel to schools and communities within the settlement. Applicants should be passionate about education equity and experienced in working in humanitarian or development contexts.

Key Responsibilities

• Organise and facilitate professional development workshops for teachers on Learning through Play methodologies and LEGO Six Bricks concepts to improve classroom practices.
• Conduct regular support-supervision visits to pre-primary and primary classrooms to observe teaching and provide constructive feedback on lesson delivery.
• Guide teachers in developing low-cost, locally sourced teaching and learning materials that align with play-based pedagogy and curriculum goals.
• Facilitate peer-learning circles and mentorship sessions to encourage collaborative problem-solving and experience sharing among educators.
• Organise community sensitisation meetings and PTA engagements to raise awareness about the benefits of playful learning for child development.
• Support home-based play sessions by training caregivers on how to extend learning through play into the home environment using everyday materials.
• Oversee the safe, tracked, and equitable distribution of Play Kits, teacher guides, and supplementary educational materials to all target schools.
• Partner with the MEAL Officer to collect, clean, and verify school-level data on teacher attendance, student participation, and adoption of LtP techniques.
• Monitor and report on challenges affecting implementation, such as resource gaps or cultural barriers, and recommend adaptive solutions.
• Maintain accurate records of all training activities, material distribution, and field visits for accountability and reporting purposes.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Primary Education, Early Childhood Development (ECD), or Teacher Education from a recognised institution.
• Minimum three years of hands-on experience in teaching, teacher training, or education programme support in primary or early years settings.
• Proven experience working in refugee settlements or humanitarian contexts, preferably in Uganda or similar displacement settings.
• Strong understanding of active learning, child-centred, and play-based methodologies and their application in low-resource classrooms.
• Valid motorcycle riding licence and ability to travel safely across uneven terrain within the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement.
• Fluency in English and at least one local language spoken in Kiryandongo, such as Acholi, Langi, Arabic, or Kiswahili, for effective community engagement.

Desirable

• Experience with the Learning through Play (LtP) curriculum or similar play-based education programmes supported by international partners.
• Prior work with LEGO Six Bricks or other manipulative-based learning tools in teacher training or classroom settings.
• Knowledge of basic data collection and monitoring tools, including digital forms or Excel, for tracking education indicators.
• Experience facilitating adult learning sessions using participatory approaches such as role-play, group discussion, or reflective practice.
• Familiarity with Ugandan national pre-primary and primary curriculum frameworks and how play-based methods complement them.
