Interschools Coding Competition

Job Overview

Interschools Coding Competition is seeking a skilled Full Stack Engineer to join their growing technology team in Uganda. This role involves end-to-end ownership of production software systems that power national coding competitions and educational platforms. You will work on both the competition management system and the learning management platform, ensuring reliability during high-traffic events.

The ideal candidate thrives in environments where software directly impacts real users under real deadlines. You will be responsible for designing, building, testing, deploying, and monitoring features across multiple platforms. This is an opportunity to solve complex engineering problems related to scalability, performance, and user experience at scale.

Your work will support hundreds of schools and thousands of students participating in online competitions, registration, training, and qualification stages. The systems you build must remain stable and responsive during peak usage, such as simultaneous school registrations or national competition events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement database schemas, APIs, and business logic for competition and learning platforms using PostgreSQL and Node.js.
  • Develop responsive frontend interfaces for student and school dashboards using React.js and modern CSS frameworks.
  • Build and maintain background job processing systems for tasks like result calculation, notifications, and data synchronization.
  • Implement secure authentication and authorization systems including role-based access control and session management.
  • Integrate payment gateways for freemium and paid-content access on the learning management platform.
  • Optimize application performance through caching strategies, query optimization, and load testing for high-concurrency scenarios.
  • Deploy and monitor applications using CI/CD pipelines, ensuring system reliability during peak traffic events.
  • Troubleshoot production issues in real time, particularly during live competitions when thousands of users are active simultaneously.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and translate educational needs into technical solutions.
  • Maintain code quality through testing, code reviews, and adherence to engineering best practices across the stack.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as a Full Stack Engineer with strong proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frontend frameworks like React.js.
  • Solid backend development skills including API design, database management (PostgreSQL preferred), and server-side logic implementation.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and deploy scalable web applications that handle concurrent users and large data volumes.
  • Experience with version control (Git), automated testing, and deployment pipelines in a professional software development environment.
  • Understanding of web security principles, including authentication, authorization, and data protection best practices.

Desirable

  • Experience with educational technology platforms or systems managing large-scale user registrations and assessments.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization technologies like Docker.
  • Knowledge of payment processing systems and compliance requirements for handling transactions in educational contexts.
  • Background in building learning management systems with features like course catalogs, progress tracking, and enrollment workflows.
  • Exposure to observability tools and practices for monitoring application performance and user behavior in production.

What the Role Offers

  • Opportunity to work on impactful educational technology used by thousands of students and schools across Uganda annually.
  • Competitive salary package aligned with IT market standards for mid-level to senior engineering roles in Kampala.
  • Professional growth through exposure to complex scalability, performance, and reliability challenges in production systems.
  • Collaborative engineering culture that values ownership, problem-solving, and continuous learning across the full stack.
  • Chance to contribute to national STEM initiatives by enabling access to coding education and competition opportunities.
