Uganda Registration Services Bureau
Job Overview
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) is seeking motivated and innovative graduates to join its Graduate Trainee Programme within the ICT and Innovation Department. This one‑year programme is designed to equip young professionals with the technical skills, leadership abilities, and practical experience needed to thrive in Uganda’s growing digital landscape. Trainees will be placed in Kampala and will work on a variety of projects that support the bureau’s mandate of facilitating private sector development through efficient registration services.
Key Responsibilities
Trainees will assist in the maintenance and administration of the bureau’s ICT infrastructure, including servers, networks, and end‑user devices. They will participate in routine system monitoring, troubleshooting, and user support to ensure minimal downtime and optimal performance across all departments.
They will contribute to software development initiatives by helping to design, test, and deploy applications that improve service delivery, such as online registration portals and internal management systems. This includes writing code, conducting debugging, and collaborating with senior developers on DevOps practices.
Trainees will support data management and cybersecurity efforts by assisting in data backup procedures, vulnerability assessments, and the implementation of security policies. They will also help prepare reports on system usage and recommend improvements based on analytical findings.
They will engage in knowledge‑sharing sessions, attend workshops, and work on mini‑projects that foster innovation and encourage them to challenge existing processes. Trainees are expected to document their learning and present findings to mentors and supervisors at the end of each rotation.
Qualifications & Experience
Applicants must have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree (Honors) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Cyber Security, or a closely related field from a recognised university. The degree must have been awarded within the last two years to ensure recent exposure to current technologies and academic practices.
Candidates should demonstrate a strong foundation in core ICT concepts such as networking, operating systems, database management, and programming fundamentals. Practical experience gained through internships, academic projects, or personal initiatives in areas like web development, system administration, or IT support will be considered an advantage.
Beyond technical abilities, the bureau looks for individuals with excellent communication skills, a proactive attitude, and the capacity to work effectively in a team environment. Leadership potential, initiative, and sound judgment are essential traits that will be assessed during the selection process.
Proficiency in commonly used productivity tools and a willingness to learn new software platforms are required. Familiarity with cloud computing concepts, basic cybersecurity principles, and experience with version control systems such as Git will strengthen an applicant’s profile.
Benefits & Perks
Successful trainees will receive a competitive monthly stipend that reflects the cost of living in Kampala, enabling them to focus on learning and professional growth without financial strain. The bureau also provides a structured mentorship programme where each trainee is paired with an experienced ICT professional who offers guidance, feedback, and career advice throughout the year.
To support work‑life balance, trainees benefit from subsidised meals during working hours, a transport allowance to ease commuting within the city, and access to bureau facilities such as the library and recreational spaces. Health insurance coverage is provided for the duration of the traineeship, ensuring access to medical care when needed.
Upon successful completion of the programme, high‑performing trainees may be considered for permanent positions within URSB or recommended for opportunities in other government agencies and private sector organisations. The bureau issues a certificate of completion that recognises the skills and competencies acquired during the traineeship.
