Job Overview

The Transport WBG Africa Fellowship Program offers Ph.D. candidates and recent graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa a chance to work with the World Bank’s transport sector. Fellows will join projects that improve mobility, reduce poverty, and support sustainable development across the continent.

The fellowship runs for up to twelve months, providing hands-on experience in research, policy analysis, and project implementation. Participants receive mentorship from senior staff, access to World Bank resources, and a stipend to cover living expenses while based in Kampala, Uganda.

Key Responsibilities

As a Transport WBG Africa Fellow, you will contribute to the Bank’s mission by supporting transport‑related research and operational tasks. Your work will help shape policies that enhance infrastructure efficiency and accessibility across African nations.

• Conduct literature reviews and data collection on transport infrastructure projects, including roads, railways, and ports, to support evidence-based policy recommendations.
• Assist in the preparation of project appraisal documents, cost‑benefit analyses, and risk assessments for proposed transport investments in client countries.
• Collaborate with task teams to develop transport sector notes, briefing papers, and presentations that summarize key findings for senior management and stakeholders.
• Participate in field missions to gather stakeholder feedback, assess project implementation progress, and identify lessons learned for future transport initiatives.
• Support the monitoring and evaluation of ongoing transport programs by tracking performance indicators, verifying data quality, and drafting progress reports.
• Contribute to knowledge sharing activities, including organizing workshops, webinars, and training sessions that promote best practices in transport planning and management.
• Assist in the preparation of grant proposals and funding requests for transport‑related research, ensuring alignment with World Bank strategic priorities and client needs.
• Maintain accurate records of all assignments, update project databases, and ensure timely submission of deliverables to supervisors and team leads.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants must demonstrate strong academic backgrounds in transport engineering, economics, planning, or related fields, along with research aptitude and a commitment to development work in Sub‑Saharan Africa.

Essential

Essential qualifications are mandatory for consideration and must be clearly evidenced in your application.

• Hold a Ph.D. degree (or have submitted thesis) in transport engineering, transport economics, urban planning, logistics, or a closely related discipline from a recognized university.
• Be a national of a Sub‑Saharan Africa country, with proof of citizenship or residency required at the time of application.
• Demonstrate excellent quantitative and analytical skills, including proficiency in statistical software such as Stata, R, or Python, and experience with data visualization tools.
• Possess strong written and verbal communication abilities in English, with the capacity to produce clear reports, policy briefs, and academic papers.
• Show a proven interest in transport sector development, evidenced by prior research, internships, volunteer work, or professional experience related to mobility, infrastructure, or logistics.

Desirable

Desirable qualifications will strengthen your application but are not mandatory.

• Previous experience working with international organizations, government agencies, or NGOs on transport‑related projects, such as road safety programs or public transport reforms.
• Familiarity with World Bank operational policies, procedures, and safeguards, particularly those concerning environmental and social impacts of infrastructure projects.
• Experience in conducting transport surveys, traffic counts, or logistics assessments using modern data collection tools such as GPS devices, mobile apps, and remote sensing platforms.
• Knowledge of regional transport corridors, trade facilitation initiatives, and infrastructure financing mechanisms prevalent in Sub‑Saharan Africa, including PPP models and multilateral funding sources.
• Ability to work effectively in multicultural teams and adapt quickly to changing priorities in a fast‑paced, results‑driven environment typical of international development projects.
