Xclusive Uganda is seeking a dedicated Greenhouse In-charge to oversee Kalanchoe production operations at their Kampala facility. This role is vital for maintaining optimal growing conditions and ensuring high-quality plant output across the company’s horticulture divisions. The successful candidate will join a team of 550 colleagues working across 11 hectares of production area.

As part of Xclusive Uganda’s integrated horticulture group, which includes Xclusive Young Plants, Xclusive Kalanchoe, and Xclusive Chrysanthemum, the Greenhouse In-charge will play a key role in crop management and quality control. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to Uganda’s growing floriculture export sector while developing specialized expertise in ornamental plant production.

The role requires hands-on management of greenhouse environments, with particular focus on irrigation systems, pest control, and climate regulation. Candidates should be prepared to work in a dynamic agricultural setting where attention to detail and adherence to protocols directly impact crop health and yield.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor irrigation processes including EC/pH measurements, identify dry spots, flush driplines, and report any leakages promptly to maintain optimal water distribution.
  • Conduct regular sample collection procedures for pest and disease detection, ensuring accurate monitoring of chrysanthemum and kalanchoe crops throughout growth cycles.
  • Implement pest and disease control programs using proper bio-chemical application techniques, including calibrated physical spraying to protect crop health.
  • Maintain greenhouse hygiene by regularly cleaning insect gutters and replacing sticky cards on a weekly basis to monitor flying pest populations effectively.
  • Control greenhouse climate parameters through timely adjustments of ventilation, shading, and heating systems to create ideal growing conditions.
  • Supervise spray men by checking their daily work completion against established checklists, ensuring proper protective equipment use and application accuracy.
  • Perform routine plant inspections to identify early signs of stress, nutrient deficiencies, or pest infestations requiring immediate intervention.
  • Keep detailed records of all agricultural activities including pesticide applications, irrigation schedules, and environmental measurements for traceability and analysis.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • A diploma or certificate in Agriculture, Horticulture, or a closely related field from a recognized Ugandan institution is required for this technical position.
  • Minimum of two years hands-on experience in agriculture or horticulture production, preferably in greenhouse or nursery settings with ornamental crops.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions precisely, maintain punctuality, and work cooperatively within a team environment under supervision.
  • Physical capability to perform spraying operations safely, including carrying equipment and working for extended periods in greenhouse conditions.
  • Proficiency in written and oral English communication to understand technical manuals, complete reports, and coordinate with team members effectively.

Desirable

  • Previous experience specifically with kalanchoe or chrysanthemum cultivation, including knowledge of their specific growth requirements and common pests.
  • Familiarity with integrated pest management (IPM) principles and biological control methods used in modern horticulture production systems.
  • Basic computer literacy for data entry, report generation, and accessing digital agricultural resources or monitoring systems.
  • Knowledge of Ugandan agricultural regulations regarding pesticide use, export standards, and workplace safety in horticulture facilities.
  • Experience training or supervising junior staff in greenhouse operations, demonstrating leadership potential for future career advancement.

What the Role Offers

  • Competitive monthly salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, paid regularly through formal payroll systems with statutory deductions.
  • Transport allowance or company-provided shuttle service to facilitate reliable commuting to the Kampala-based greenhouse facility.
  • Daily lunch provision or subsidy to support employee nutrition during work hours, particularly valuable for those working extended shifts.
  • Access to basic health insurance coverage through the company’s group plan, including outpatient services and emergency care provisions.
  • Opportunities for professional development through on-the-job training, workshops, and potential sponsorship for relevant agricultural courses.
  • Stable employment with a growing Ugandan horticulture exporter that values long-term staff retention and internal promotion pathways.
