Job Overview

Yalelo Uganda is seeking a dedicated Health, Safety, Environment & Social Assistant to join its growing team. This role supports the implementation of health, safety, environmental and social programs across the company’s operations. The successful candidate will work closely with the HSE Officer to ensure compliance with national legislation and promote a culture of safety and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

The assistant will help plan and implement health, safety and environmental policies and programs throughout the organization. This includes coordinating safety meetings, updating procedures and ensuring that all sites follow the required standards.

Providing advice to employees on safety-related topics is a core duty, requiring the assistant to be approachable and knowledgeable about best practices. They will answer questions, distribute safety materials and guide staff on correct use of protective equipment.

The role involves assisting in the development and delivery of regular educational and training sessions on HSE topics. This may involve preparing presentations, organizing workshops and tracking attendance to ensure that all workers receive up-to-date information.

Collaboration with the Human Resources department to establish a new employee onboarding process for safety, health and social aspects is also required. The assistant will help design induction checklists, conduct safety tours and ensure new hires understand emergency procedures.

Assisting in conducting risk assessments, identifying potential hazards and establishing corrective actions forms a significant part of the job. The assistant will visit work sites, note unsafe conditions and recommend practical solutions to reduce risks.

Enforcing preventative measures and ensuring compliance with rules and regulations is essential. This includes monitoring the use of personal protective equipment, checking that safety signs are visible and verifying that work practices align with legal requirements.

Preparing and presenting reports on safety incidents, near-misses, first-aid cases, accidents, violations and their causes is another key task. The assistant will collect data, analyse trends and produce clear reports for management review.

Ensuring that all HSE-related records are entered into the health and safety or environmental management systems daily maintains accurate documentation. The assistant will update databases, file reports and keep records organized for audits.

Participating in the development and delivery of toolbox talks on a weekly basis helps keep safety top of mind for all employees. The assistant will prepare short talks, deliver them on site and encourage worker participation.

Overseeing workplace repairs, installations and any activities that could pose risks to employee safety ensures that contractors follow safety protocols. The assistant will review work permits, monitor hot work and verify that safety barriers are in place.

Qualifications & Experience

A minimum of a Diploma in Environmental Management or a closely related field is required for this position. A Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, occupational health or safety management will be considered an added advantage.

Holding a Certificate in Occupational Health, Safety and Environment strengthens the candidate’s profile and demonstrates specialized knowledge in the area. Such certifications are highly valued by employers in the sector.

Applicants must have at least two years of hands‑on experience in HSE‑related work. This experience may have been gained in manufacturing, agriculture, construction or any industry where safety and environmental compliance are critical.

A solid understanding of Ugandan legislation and procedures related to safety, health and the environment is essential. Familiarity with the Occupational Safety and Health Act, the National Environment Management Authority guidelines and other relevant regulations is expected.

Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials and practices, such as chemicals, fuels and waste handling, is required to assess risks accurately. The assistant should be able to interpret safety data sheets and recommend appropriate control measures.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint, is necessary for preparing reports, maintaining records and delivering presentations.

Strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team are crucial. The assistant must prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently and support colleagues in achieving safety goals.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills enable the assistant to convey safety information clearly to workers at all levels. They must be able to listen actively, provide feedback and resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.

A proactive problem‑solver who can manage difficult situations with positive results will thrive in this role. The candidate should show initiative, remain calm under pressure and seek continuous improvement in safety performance.
