CBR Africa Network

Job Overview

The Knowledge and Communications Officer plays a pivotal role in shaping how CBR Africa Network (CAN) shares its impact across the continent. This position transforms complex programme evidence, member stories, and best practices into clear, engaging, and accessible knowledge products. Based in Kampala, the officer will ensure that CAN’s message resonates across five African sub-regions, multiple languages, and diverse stakeholder groups. The role bridges strategic vision with hands-on execution, requiring both editorial discipline and creative flair to build a cohesive brand and an active, learning-focused communication system that supports policy influence and Centre of Excellence readiness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and operationalise a multilingual Communication and Knowledge Dissemination Strategy aligned with CAN’s project workplan and future Centre of Excellence vision.
  • Establish and maintain a 12-month editorial and content calendar covering dialogues, webinars, newsletters, good-practice products, network activities, campaigns, and key continental or global events.
  • Enforce clear brand, editorial, consent, accessibility, and quality-assurance standards across all CAN communication channels and products to ensure consistency and professionalism.
  • Provide timely communication advice to the Secretariat and International Advisory Board, including key messages, speaking points, media materials, advocacy content, and reputation-risk management strategies.
  • Lead the conversion of programme evidence, member experience, and documented good practice into accurate, accessible, and engaging knowledge and communication products for diverse audiences.
  • Coordinate with contributors across five African sub-regions to gather, package, and disseminate knowledge that travels across countries, languages, stakeholder groups, and digital platforms.
  • Use analytics and audience feedback routinely to improve reach, accessibility, and engagement of CAN’s communication outputs, ensuring continuous improvement and impact measurement.
  • Build and maintain an active communication system that supports learning, membership engagement, policy influence, and the overall readiness of CAN as a Centre of Excellence.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Development Studies, or a related field, supplemented by professional experience in knowledge management or communications.
  • At least three years of experience in strategic communications, editorial management, or knowledge dissemination within an NGO, development organisation, or continental network setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement communication strategies, editorial calendars, and content production workflows in multilingual and multicultural environments.
  • Strong editorial judgement, excellent writing skills in English and preferably another African language, and proficiency in digital communication tools and analytics platforms.
  • Experience coordinating with contributors across multiple regions or countries, managing consent, accessibility, and quality assurance in content production.

Desirable

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Development Studies, or a related field, with additional experience in policy influence or advocacy communications.
  • Proven track record of building brand identity and communication systems for networks or coalitions operating across the African continent.
  • Familiarity with Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) or Community-Based Inclusive Development (CBID) principles and the work of Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs).
  • Experience using data and audience feedback to refine communication strategies and improve engagement metrics in development contexts.

What the Role Offers

  • A competitive salary package with housing allowance, transport reimbursement, and lunch benefits, reflecting the Uganda market standards for senior NGO roles.
  • Comprehensive health insurance coverage, including medical, dental, and vision benefits, for the employee and their immediate dependents.
  • Opportunities for professional development, including training in strategic communications, knowledge management, and policy advocacy at both regional and continental levels.
  • A dynamic and inclusive work environment within an African-led continental network that values diversity, innovation, and collaborative learning across sub-regions.
  • Contract duration of one year, renewable based on performance and organisational needs, with potential for growth into leadership roles within CAN’s expanding structure.
