Job Overview
Xclusive Uganda is seeking a dedicated Spray Man to join their horticulture team in Kampala. This role focuses on crop protection activities across their 11-hectare production area comprising Young Plants, Kalanchoe, and Chrysanthemum facilities. The successful candidate will ensure proper spray protocols are followed while maintaining greenhouse hygiene and supporting overall plant health.
Working with a team of 550 colleagues, the Spray Man plays a vital role in protecting valuable cuttings from pests and diseases. This position requires attention to detail, adherence to safety procedures, and the ability to work effectively within a structured agricultural environment. The role contributes directly to the quality and yield of Xclusive Uganda’s horticultural products.
The position offers an opportunity to develop specialized skills in greenhouse crop protection within a established Ugandan horticulture company. Candidates will gain practical experience in modern spraying techniques, pest identification, and greenhouse management practices while working in a collaborative team setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all spray protocols are fully followed before during and after every spraying operation to maintain effectiveness and safety standards.
- Perform thorough cleaning and weeding activities inside and outside greenhouse structures to prevent pest harborage and disease spread.
- Close shades and curtains of greenhouses prior to starting chemical mixing procedures to contain sprays within target areas.
- Identify common pests that attack cuttings and monitor their presence to enable timely intervention and appropriate treatment selection.
- Prepare and mix chemicals according to specified ratios and safety guidelines while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Operate spraying equipment correctly to ensure even coverage and minimize waste or drift to non-target areas.
- Maintain accurate records of spray applications including dates chemicals used and areas treated for traceability and compliance purposes.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns immediately to the supervisor to prevent accidents and ensure timely repairs.
- Participate in regular team meetings to share observations and learn about updated procedures or new pest threats in the greenhouse.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor that are directly related to crop protection and greenhouse maintenance activities.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Hold a valid Certificate in Agriculture from a recognized Ugandan institution demonstrating foundational knowledge of crop production principles.
- Demonstrate proven ability to safely and effectively operate spraying equipment in greenhouse or field conditions.
- Possess good written and oral communication skills in both English and Luganda for clear instruction following and team coordination.
- Show flexibility and a fast learning attitude to adapt to changing spray schedules and new pest management techniques.
- Exhibit integrity accuracy and speed in performing tasks while maintaining high standards of work quality and safety compliance.
Desirable
- Previous experience working in horticulture floriculture or greenhouse environments particularly with cuttings or ornamental plants.
- Knowledge of integrated pest management principles and ability to distinguish between beneficial and harmful insects in crops.
- Familiarity with greenhouse environmental controls including shade systems ventilation and irrigation as they relate to spray applications.
- Basic understanding of chemical safety data sheets and proper storage procedures for agricultural chemicals in tropical climates.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while still contributing effectively to team goals and objectives.
