Job Overview
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is recruiting experienced drivers to join its transport team in Kampala. This role supports the commission’s mandate to regulate telecommunications broadcasting and postal sectors across Uganda. Successful candidates will ensure safe and timely movement of staff guests and official cargo while maintaining vehicle security and compliance with all traffic regulations.
As a statutory body established under the Communications Act 2013 UCC plays a vital role in developing Uganda’s communications infrastructure. The driver position contributes directly to operational efficiency by providing reliable transport services that enable commission staff to perform their regulatory duties effectively throughout the country.
This is a full-time position based at UCC headquarters in Kampala with potential for upcountry travel and weekend assignments. The role demands professionalism discretion and a strong commitment to road safety while representing the commission in all transport-related activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct daily pre-trip vehicle inspections checking tires brakes lights fluid levels and body condition to ensure roadworthiness before each journey.
- Transport commission staff guests and official cargo to authorized destinations following approved schedules and defensive driving principles at all times.
- Maintain complete custody of assigned vehicle including keys fuel cards accessories and cargo while ensuring use is strictly for authorised official purposes only.
- Promptly report any mechanical faults accidents incidents or vehicle damage to the Technician Fleet Management and cooperate fully during repair processes.
- Keep accurate records of all trips including logbooks movement sheets fuel consumption and vehicle condition reports submitted within required timeframes.
- Provide courteous and professional service to passengers including assistance with luggage while maintaining strict confidentiality of any information encountered during duties.
- Maintain vehicle readiness for authorised assignments including long-distance travel upcountry trips and availability outside normal working hours weekends and public holidays.
- Undertake additional fleet-related duties as reasonably assigned by transport management to support overall commission transportation operations.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Valid Ugandan driver’s license for classes relevant to UCC vehicle fleet typically including light vehicles and possibly medium trucks.
- Minimum of three years verifiable professional driving experience preferably in government institutional or corporate settings with clean record.
- Knowledge of Kampala city routes major highways and upcountry destinations plus understanding of Uganda traffic laws and regulations.
- Ability to read write and communicate effectively in English to maintain logs complete forms and interact professionally with staff and officials.
- Certificate of good conduct or police clearance demonstrating reliability trustworthiness and suitability for handling commission property and personnel.
Desirable
- Defensive driving certification or advanced driver training from recognised institution enhancing safety awareness and hazard perception skills.
- Experience with logbook management fuel monitoring systems or basic vehicle maintenance checks contributing to fleet efficiency and cost control.
- Familiarity with GPS navigation tools or dispatch systems used for trip planning tracking and reporting in modern fleet operations.
- Basic first aid knowledge enabling response to minor incidents or passenger discomfort until professional medical help arrives if needed.
- Previous experience driving for government agencies parastatals or international organisations understanding protocol and official transport requirements.
