Job Overview
UAP Old Mutual Uganda is recruiting an experienced Underwriter to join its Commercial and Personal Lines team in Kampala. The position sits within the broader UAP Old Mutual Group, a subsidiary of Old Mutual Limited, which employs 27,000 people and operates across 14 countries.
The successful candidate will play a central role in assessing risk, supporting business acquisition and retention, and administering pension scheme member records. The role blends technical underwriting judgement with day to day client service for members, employers, brokers and agency partners.
This opportunity suits a detail oriented insurance professional who enjoys working with data, regulatory frameworks and people. It is a full time position based at the company’s Kampala offices and reports into the underwriting management structure.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess and evaluate risks based on proposal forms, medical reports, financial information and supporting documentation within set guidelines.
- Ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements, underwriting policies, reinsurance treaty conditions and internal procedures.
- Provide timely and professional responses to customer, member, employer and stakeholder queries, complaints and service requests.
- Prepare quotations, deeds of adherence and underwriting terms accurately and within agreed turnaround timelines.
- Review, prepare and issue policies and underwriting documents in line with agreed terms and delegated authority limits.
- Capture and maintain accurate policy and underwriting information in the system and ensure contributions are allocated correctly.
- Process and reconcile employer and employee contributions, resolving any data or payment discrepancies that arise.
- Prepare member statements, schedules, reports and scheme documentation while maintaining data integrity across member records.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- A bachelor’s degree in insurance, actuarial science, business, finance, economics or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution.
- At least three years of hands on underwriting experience within a regulated insurance or pensions environment in Uganda.
- Solid working knowledge of underwriting guidelines, reinsurance treaty wording and Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda requirements.
- Demonstrated competence in risk assessment, pricing decisions and the application of delegated authority matrices.
- Strong numerical accuracy with proven ability to reconcile financial transactions and resolve contribution or premium discrepancies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for handling brokers, members, trustees and senior internal stakeholders.
Desirable
- Professional insurance qualification such as CII, IIU or an equivalent certification in life or general insurance underwriting.
- Prior exposure to both commercial lines and personal lines portfolios within a composite insurance company.
- Experience administering occupational pension schemes, member records and benefits processing workflows.
- Familiarity with core insurance administration platforms, CRM systems and Microsoft Excel at intermediate level or above.
