Job Overview

Marakwet Organic Farm is a fast‑growing Ugandan cocoa processing company that produces premium cocoa and chocolate products from farm to bar. The company is seeking a competent detail-oriented and ethical Accountant to join our team at our Bugolobi office. This role is central to maintaining the financial health of a rapidly expanding cocoa and chocolate manufacturing business. The successful candidate will handle day-to-day accounting tasks, ensure compliance with Ugandan tax laws, and support management decision-making through accurate financial reporting. Key Responsibilities

Prepare and issue invoices and credit notes, ensuring accurate recording in both manual records and Zoho Books. You will verify that all sales transactions are documented correctly and that customer accounts are up to date. This includes monitoring credit limits and following up on overdue amounts to maintain healthy cash flow.

Reconcile bank accounts and supplier accounts on a monthly basis. You will compare bank statements with the general ledger, identify discrepancies, and resolve them promptly. Supplier reconciliations will involve verifying outstanding invoices, processing payments, and maintaining good vendor relationships.

Prepare and submit weekly VAT reports to the Uganda Revenue Authority. This requires careful calculation of output and input tax, ensuring that all taxable supplies are captured and that returns are filed on time to avoid penalties.

Follow up outstanding customer payments and share statements of account twice monthly. You will communicate with clients, provide clear summaries of amounts due, and negotiate payment plans when necessary to reduce delinquency.

Review financial statements for accuracy and compliance with statutory requirements. You will examine profit and loss accounts, balance sheets, and cash flow statements, ensuring they reflect true and fair view of the company’s financial position.

Prepare tax returns and statutory filings, ensuring timely submission and payment. This includes corporate tax, PAYE, NSSF, and any other regulatory obligations, working closely with external advisors when needed.

Maintain accurate accounting records and ensure the integrity of financial data. You will implement internal controls, perform regular data backups, and conduct periodic audits of the accounting system to prevent errors and fraud.

Organize and update financial records on a monthly basis. This involves filing supporting documents, maintaining an organized archive, and ensuring that information is easily retrievable for internal and external stakeholders.

Prepare documentation required for external audits. You will liaise with auditors, provide schedules, provide auditors’ schedules, and ensure that all requested information is available, and assist in resolving any queries that arise during the audit process.

Reconcile accounts payable and accounts receivable. You will monitor aging reports, follow up on overdue items, and work with the treasury function to optimize working capital.

Process and monitor timely bank payments. You will prepare payment batches, obtain necessary approvals, and ensure that funds are transferred securely and on schedule.

Examine bank statements and reconcile them with the general ledger. This includes verifying interest charges, bank fees, and ensuring that all transactions are properly classified.

Review and verify employee expense claims. You will check that claims comply with company policy, validate receipts, and process reimbursements efficiently.

Prepare weekly reports on collections received and supplier payments made. These reports will help management monitor cash inflows and outflows, enabling informed decisions about financing and investment.

Prepare monthly financial and management reports. You will compile performance metrics, variance analysis, and key indicators that support strategic planning and operational control.

Support departmental and organizational budgeting processes. You will assist in gathering data, preparing forecasts, and monitoring actual performance against budget throughout the fiscal year.

Maintain strict confidentiality of all company financial information. You will adhere to data protection policies, ensure that sensitive information is accessed only by authorized personnel, and promote a culture of trust and discretion.

Qualifications and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field. This educational foundation provides the necessary knowledge of financial principles, accounting standards, and business practices required for the role.

CPA (Level II or above) or ACCA qualification is an added advantage. Holding a professional certification demonstrates a higher level of technical expertise and commitment to the accounting profession.

Minimum of 2 years’ accounting experience, preferably in manufacturing, FMCG, or agribusiness. Experience in these sectors will familiarize you with inventory costing, production costing, and the specific regulatory environment that affects agricultural processing companies.

Proficiency in Zoho Books or other accounting software. You should be comfortable navigating the system, creating custom reports, and utilizing automation features to improve efficiency.

Good knowledge of Ugandan tax laws and statutory compliance. This includes understanding VAT regulations, income tax rules, payroll taxes, and the filing requirements set by the Uganda Revenue Authority and other government bodies.

Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. You will need to interpret financial data, identify trends, and develop solutions to complex accounting challenges.

High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail. The role demands ethical handling of financial information, meticulous record-keeping, and a commitment to delivering accurate work consistently.
