Job Overview

Baikal Financial Services is seeking a motivated Junior Accountant to join its growing Accounts Department at the Bukoto–Ntinda Road office in Kampala. This entry-level position offers hands-on experience in core accounting functions while supporting the company’s commitment to accurate financial management and service excellence.

The Junior Accountant will work closely with senior accountants to ensure that daily financial transactions are recorded correctly, invoices are issued promptly, and records are maintained in an orderly fashion. This role is ideal for recent graduates or individuals with one to two years of accounting experience who are eager to develop their professional skills.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of tasks that support the smooth operation of the accounting function. Attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to follow established procedures are essential for maintaining the integrity of financial data.

  • Record daily financial transactions accurately in the accounting system, ensuring all entries are supported by proper documentation.
  • Generate and manage customer invoices, verify amounts, and ensure timely distribution to clients for prompt payment processing.
  • Perform bank and petty-cash reconciliations monthly, identify discrepancies, and resolve issues in coordination with the cashier and senior accountants.
  • Maintain complete and accurate financial records, including ledgers, journals, and supporting documents, in both physical and electronic formats.
  • File financial documents systematically for easy access and retrieval, adhering to the company’s filing policies and retention schedule.
  • Identify and report any discrepancies or irregularities in financial records to the supervisor, recommending corrective actions when necessary.
  • Assist with routine accounting and administrative duties, such as preparing payment vouchers, processing expense claims, and updating the fixed asset register.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information, ensuring compliance with data protection policies and ethical standards.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly payroll by verifying employee records, calculating deductions, and coordinating with the HR department for timely disbursement.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

Candidates must possess a solid foundation in accounting principles and demonstrate the ability to apply them in a practical work environment. The following qualifications are required to be considered for the Junior Accountant position.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or a related field from a recognised university.
  • One to two years of hands-on accounting experience, preferably within a microfinance institution or similar financial services environment.
  • Good understanding of accounting principles and practices, including knowledge of IFRS or local accounting standards applicable in Uganda.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with ability to create spreadsheets, use formulas, and generate basic financial reports.
  • Familiarity with accounting software, particularly Tally, and the capability to learn new systems quickly.
  • Strong attention to detail, high level of integrity, and the ability to maintain confidentiality when handling financial data.

Desirable

While not mandatory, the following attributes are considered advantageous and may strengthen a candidate’s application. Possessing these qualities can contribute to faster adaptation and greater effectiveness in the role.

  • Experience with preparing monthly management accounts and assisting in the preparation of financial statements.
  • Knowledge of tax regulations and VAT compliance procedures relevant to businesses operating in Uganda.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet tight deadlines without compromising quality.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to liaise with clients, suppliers, and internal teams.
  • Familiarity with basic auditing procedures and the ability to support internal or external audit activities.
  • A proactive attitude, willingness to learn new accounting techniques, and enthusiasm for continuous professional development.
