Job Overview
ThreeWays Shipping Services seeks an experienced Business Unit Manager to lead the Transtrac division in Kampala. This role oversees the complete profit and loss responsibility for the company’s nationwide and cross-border transport and distribution network. The successful candidate will drive operational excellence while ensuring regulatory compliance and stakeholder satisfaction across Uganda and regional borders.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the unit’s profit and loss statement, develop annual budgets, and implement growth strategies to increase revenue streams across domestic and international transport corridors.
- Oversee daily transportation and fleet operations including routing optimization, dispatch coordination, and fuel consumption monitoring to maximize asset utilization and reduce operational costs.
- Manage local distribution networks focusing on last-mile delivery efficiency, cross-docking operations, and real-time shipment tracking using TMS and WMS systems for improved visibility.
- Ensure strict compliance with local and cross-border transport regulations, health and safety standards, and customs requirements to prevent delays and maintain legal adherence.
- Handle financial oversight including budget management, cost control mechanisms, accurate billing processes, and timely payment collection from clients and stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong stakeholder and vendor relationships through effective carrier contract negotiations and ongoing communication with clients, regulators, and partners.
- Provide team leadership by recruiting qualified personnel, conducting training programs, and mentoring drivers, dispatchers, and operations supervisors to build high-performing teams.
- Drive operational synergy with the Clearing and Forwarding department to eliminate transit delays, optimize supply chain efficiency, and ensure seamless end-to-end delivery performance.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a closely related field from a recognized institution of higher learning.
- Minimum five years of progressive experience managing cross-border transport corridors and nationwide distribution networks within the logistics or transportation sector.
- Proven track record in fleet and asset optimization strategies that have demonstrably reduced costs while improving service delivery and on-time performance metrics.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with Clearing and Forwarding teams to resolve bottlenecks and improve overall supply chain velocity and customer satisfaction.
- Strong stakeholder management skills with experience negotiating carrier contracts and maintaining productive relationships with diverse clients and regulatory bodies.
- Essential leadership capabilities including recruitment, training, and mentoring of operational staff to build cohesive teams capable of achieving challenging performance targets.
Desirable
- Proficiency in Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) with hands-on experience in software implementation and optimization for logistics operations.
- Knowledge of East African Community transport protocols, customs procedures, and regional trade agreements that facilitate smoother cross-border movements of goods.
- Experience with heavy lifting operations and specialized cargo handling requirements for oversized or project cargo movements across Uganda and neighboring countries.
- Familiarity with health and safety compliance frameworks specific to the transport industry, including ISO standards and occupational safety regulations applicable to fleet operations.
- Additional certification in project management or supply chain analytics that enhances analytical capabilities for data-driven decision making in complex logistics environments.
