Job Overview

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is seeking an experienced Country Finance Director to oversee financial operations for its Uganda program. This role provides strategic financial leadership, ensuring alignment with global WCS policies, donor requirements, and Ugandan legislation. The successful candidate will manage finance teams across the Queen Elizabeth Protected Area (QEPA) and Murchison Falls Protected Area (MFPA) sites, delivering accurate financial information to support decision-making and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

As Country Finance Director, you will develop and implement financial strategies that support the Country Program’s conservation objectives. You will lead the annual budgeting process, coordinate with project managers to create realistic financial plans, and monitor expenditures against forecasts.

You will oversee monthly financial closing, prepare timely reports for the Country Director and the Global CFO, and ensure that all financial statements comply with International Financial Reporting Standards and WCS internal policies.

Risk management is a core part of the role; you will identify financial risks, design mitigation strategies, and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard assets.

You will manage donor grants, ensuring proper allocation, tracking, and reporting in accordance with donor agreements and Ugandan regulations.

Additionally, you will mentor and develop finance staff, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement within the team.

Qualifications & Experience

Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field; a master’s degree or professional certification such as CPA, ACCA, or CFA is highly preferred.

A minimum of eight years of progressive finance experience is required, with at least three years in a senior managerial role within an international NGO, donor-funded project, or multinational corporation.

Strong knowledge of Ugandan tax laws, public financial management regulations, and donor compliance frameworks (such as USAID, EU, and GEF) is essential.

Proficiency with financial management systems, advanced Excel skills, and experience with ERP software like SAP or Oracle will be considered an asset.

Excellent communication abilities are necessary to present complex financial information to non‑financial stakeholders and to build effective relationships with donors, partners, and government officials.
