Job Overview

Swisscontact is recruiting a Field Assistant to join its technical implementation team in Kampala. This role supports the delivery of market systems development projects focused on creating green and decent jobs. The successful candidate will work closely with intervention managers to facilitate stakeholder engagement and monitor project activities across horticulture value chains.

The position involves direct interaction with private and public sector partners to promote inclusive systems development. Field Assistants play a key role in mobilizing stakeholders for workshops, meetings and partnership initiatives. This is an opportunity to contribute to sustainable economic growth in Uganda through practical field-level support.

Based in Kampala, the role requires regular travel to project sites to support implementation and monitoring. The Field Assistant will help ensure that interventions are effectively coordinated with MSMEs and larger enterprises. The role contributes to Swisscontact’s mission of promoting skills development and entrepreneurship for inclusive economic development.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical and programmatic support in Market Systems Development programming under the guidance of the Intervention Manager.
• Assist in co-creating business models suitable for WeWork-Creating Green and Decent Jobs interventions including access to information, skills, finance and markets.
• Support the mapping, onboarding and maintenance of business relationships with private sector actors including MSMEs and large enterprises.
• Work with MSMEs to understand their business constraints and design interventions that create growth opportunities for enterprises and beneficiaries.
• Support the ideation, co-creation and design of business partnerships to enhance and streamline trade routes in horticulture value chains.
• Facilitate the implementation and monitoring of project interventions through partners from private and public sectors using the inclusive systems development approach.
• Mobilize and support stakeholders and project partners to participate in sector promotional meetings, workshops and other project activities.
• Assist in collecting field data and preparing reports on intervention progress and partnership engagements for project monitoring purposes.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Business Administration, Economics or a related social science field from a recognized institution.
• Minimum of two years of practical experience in field-based project implementation, preferably in agriculture or market systems development projects.
• Demonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement, particularly with private sector actors such as MSMEs and agribusiness enterprises.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and build rapport with diverse partners.
• Proficiency in using MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for report preparation, data organization and presentation of field findings.
• Fluency in English both written and spoken; knowledge of Luganda or other local languages is an added advantage for community mobilization.

Desirable

• Experience working with international NGOs or development projects funded by donors such as EU, USAID or Swiss Development Cooperation.
• Familiarity with Market Systems Development (MSD) or Inclusive Systems Development (ISD) approaches and tools used in value chain development.
• Prior experience in horticulture value chains including knowledge of production, post-harvest handling and market linkages for fruits, vegetables or flowers.
• Basic monitoring and evaluation skills including ability to track indicators, collect baseline data and support outcome harvesting exercises.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regularly to field sites across different regions of Uganda as required by project activities.
