Job Overview
Housing Finance Bank is seeking an experienced Manager Sustainability to drive the bank’s sustainability agenda. This role provides strategic leadership for sustainability climate risk and sustainable finance initiatives across all business segments. The position is based in Kampala and reports directly to executive management.
The successful candidate will develop implement and monitor sustainability strategies policies and frameworks that create long-term value for stakeholders. This includes ensuring alignment with corporate strategy regulatory requirements and international best practices while integrating sustainability considerations into business strategy product development risk management operations and decision-making processes.
As the bank’s subject matter expert on sustainability climate risk and sustainable finance the manager will oversee governance risk and compliance functions. They will lead the implementation of sustainability policies frameworks and social and environmental management systems while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations including Bank of Uganda Climate Risk Guidelines and IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop implement and continuously review the Bank’s Sustainability Strategy Sustainability Agenda and Climate Risk Strategy to ensure alignment with corporate strategy regulatory requirements and international best practices.
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the Bank’s sustainability climate-risk and sustainable finance agenda across all business segments and support functions.
- Serve as the Bank’s subject matter expert on sustainability climate risk sustainable finance and emerging sustainability-related regulations and standards.
- Lead the integration of sustainability considerations into business strategy product development risk management operations procurement and decision-making processes.
- Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of the Sustainability and Climate Risk Policy Sustainability Risk Management Framework Social and Environmental Management System (SEMS) and related governance frameworks.
- Provide oversight of sustainability and climate-risk assessments and ensure effective integration of sustainability risks and opportunities into the Bank’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework.
- Ensure compliance with applicable sustainability-related regulations including Bank of Uganda Climate Risk Guidelines Uganda National Green Taxonomy Uganda Bankers Association Sustainability Framework IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards and other relevant frameworks.
- Monitor emerging sustainability climate-risk and regulatory developments and advise Executive Management on implications for the Bank’s strategy and operations.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Master’s degree in Environmental Science Sustainability Finance Economics or a related field from a recognised university.
- Minimum of 7 years progressive experience in sustainability climate risk management or sustainable finance preferably within the banking or financial services sector.
- Proven experience developing and implementing sustainability strategies policies and frameworks in a corporate environment.
- In-depth knowledge of Bank of Uganda Climate Risk Guidelines Uganda National Green Taxonomy and IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards.
- Strong analytical skills with ability to assess sustainability risks and opportunities and integrate them into risk management frameworks.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with experience presenting to executive boards and regulatory bodies.
Desirable
- Professional certification in sustainability such as GRI SASB or CFA Institute Certificate in ESG Investing.
- Experience with carbon accounting methodologies and greenhouse gas protocol standards.
- Knowledge of Uganda’s National Development Plan Vision 2040 and national climate change policies.
- Experience working with multilateral development banks or international financial institutions on sustainability initiatives.
- Familiarity with sustainable finance products including green bonds social bonds and sustainability-linked loans.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing sustainability reporting processes.
