Job Overview

SAPI Associates, a respected indigenous accounting firm in Uganda, is seeking dynamic professionals to fill Audit Supervisor and Audit Associate positions. These roles support the firm’s mission to deliver high-quality audit, assurance, tax, and financial advisory services across the Great Lakes region.

The Audit Supervisor leads audit engagements, plans fieldwork, and reviews junior staff work, while the Audit Associate assists in executing audit procedures and preparing documentation. Both positions require travel within Uganda and neighboring countries to serve diverse clients.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and coordinate audit assignments, ensuring timely completion of fieldwork according to client schedules and regulatory deadlines.
• Supervise audit associates and assistants, providing guidance on workpaper preparation, issue identification, and resolution of accounting queries.
• Review financial statements and supporting documents to verify compliance with IFRS, ISA, and local Ugandan accounting standards.
• Prepare clear, concise audit reports that communicate findings, recommendations, and required adjustments to management and stakeholders.
• Conduct risk assessments and develop audit programs tailored to each client’s industry, size, and internal control environment.
• Monitor audit budgets and timelines, tracking hours spent and expenses incurred to ensure profitability and client satisfaction.
• Liaise with clients’ finance teams to obtain necessary information, resolve discrepancies, and maintain strong professional relationships.
• Train and mentor junior auditors on audit methodology, software tools such as CaseWare, and effective communication practices.
• Ensure all audit working papers are properly indexed, referenced, and stored in accordance with firm quality control policies.
• Participate in continuous professional development activities, including ACCA or CPA studies, to stay current with evolving auditing standards.
• Assist in the preparation of management letters and audit clearance certificates, ensuring timely delivery to clients after fieldwork completion.
• Coordinate with tax department specialists to integrate tax implications into audit findings and provide holistic client advice.
• Maintain up-to-date working knowledge of changes in IFRS, ISA, and Ugandan regulatory frameworks through continuous learning.
• Participate in firm-wide initiatives such as quality reviews, risk management committees, and knowledge sharing sessions.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or a related field from a recognised university.
• Partial or full professional qualification such as ACCA, CPA(U), or equivalent, with at least two exams passed.
• Minimum three years of experience in external or internal audit, preferably with exposure to statutory audits.
• Practical knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and International Standards on Auditing (ISA).
• Proficiency in audit software, especially CaseWare, for preparing audit files, workpapers, and reports.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to present complex information clearly to clients and colleagues.
• Willingness to travel frequently within Uganda and the Great Lakes region to attend client sites and audit assignments.
• High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional scepticism, adhering to the firm’s ethical standards and code of conduct.
• Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines without compromising audit quality or accuracy.
• Strong analytical skills with proficiency in interpreting financial data, identifying trends, and detecting anomalies.

Desirable

• Experience with tax advisory services, including preparation of tax returns and tax planning for corporate clients.
• Familiarity with business valuation techniques and preparation of financial forecasts for SMEs and large enterprises.
• Knowledge of local Ugandan tax legislation and recent amendments affecting corporate taxpayers.
• Ability to mentor and coach trainee accountants, fostering their technical growth and professional confidence.
• Experience in conducting internal control reviews and recommending process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel advanced functions, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and financial modelling.
• Experience in conducting forensic audits or investigations, including evidence gathering and reporting findings to stakeholders.
• Familiarity with data analytics tools such as ACL or IDEA for performing substantive testing and risk assessment.
