Job Overview

SWICO is seeking an experienced Head of Claims to provide strategic leadership and overall coordination of the Claims Department. This senior role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for ensuring claims services are delivered effectively and efficiently to beneficiaries across Uganda. The position demands strong managerial skills and deep insurance industry knowledge.

The Head of Claims will oversee planning, organizing, and leading the claims team while managing the implementation of claims activities. This includes developing work plans, budgets, and strategies, as well as maintaining appropriate systems and procedures. The role requires close collaboration with the CEO and Head of Human Resources to ensure optimal department performance.

As the Head of Claims, you will be responsible for setting performance targets, conducting staff appraisals, and addressing capacity development needs. You will also ensure adherence to established systems and procedures to minimize company exposure. This is a full-time position based in Uganda with SWICO, a leading insurance provider in the region.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate the formulation of consolidated work plans, budgets, and strategies for the provision of Claims services to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
• Participate in the development and maintenance of appropriate systems, procedures, and standards for the effective and efficient delivery of Claims services.
• Oversee and coordinate the provision of required facilities and resources for Claims services to support operational effectiveness.
• Determine performance targets for the Manager Claims and conduct periodic appraisals against set targets to sustain or improve performance.
• Provide strategic guidance and support to the Manager Claims in implementing section activities and liaise with relevant departments for necessary support.
• Conduct monthly meetings with Claims Department staff to review progress, address challenges, and ensure team alignment.
• Assess staffing structure needs in liaison with CEO and Head of Human Resources, seeking approval from top management and the Board.
• Ensure appropriate support in the assessment and management of claims to minimize company exposure and maintain financial stability.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Business Administration, or a related field from a recognized university.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in insurance claims management, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
• Proven track record in developing and implementing claims strategies, policies, and procedures that improve efficiency and reduce costs.
• Strong knowledge of Ugandan insurance regulations, legal frameworks, and industry best practices.
• Excellent leadership and people management skills, with experience in conducting performance appraisals and staff development.
• Proficiency in claims management systems and Microsoft Office Suite, with ability to analyze data and generate reports.

Desirable

• Master’s degree in Insurance, Actuarial Science, or Business Administration.
• Professional certification such as ACII, CIP, or equivalent from a recognized insurance institute.
• Experience working with reinsurance treaties and facultative placements in the Ugandan or East African market.
• Familiarity with international accounting standards (IFRS) as applied to insurance claims reserves.
• Experience in change management and leading organizational transformation initiatives.
• Knowledge of emerging technologies in claims processing such as AI and digital claims platforms.
