Job Overview

The British Council seeks a skilled Communications Officer to lead the LIT TRAIN pillar of the Leaders in Teaching Programme in Uganda. This role is based in Kampala and offers a competitive salary of UGX 40,780,032 per annum. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating compelling communications that showcase the impact of teacher professional development initiatives.

Working within the Cultural Engagement Strategic Business Unit, you will translate complex programme activities into clear, accurate and engaging content for diverse stakeholders. Your work will support the British Council’s mission to build connections between the UK and Uganda through education and cultural exchange. The role requires close collaboration with government stakeholders, consortium partners and Mastercard Foundation audiences. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the planning coordination production and quality assurance of high-impact communications visibility and knowledge products for the LIT TRAIN pillar
• Translate complex programme activities technical evidence and learning into clear accurate compelling communications for teachers school leaders and government stakeholders
• Ensure programme communications are strategically aligned audience-focused donor-compliant and consistent with British Council brand safeguarding and data protection standards
• Develop and implement communications strategies that support teacher professional development inclusive pedagogy and competency-based learning initiatives
• Create content for multiple channels including digital platforms print materials and social media to reach diverse audience segments effectively
• Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of communications activities using agreed metrics and provide regular reports to stakeholders
• Collaborate with programme teams to gather stories case studies and evidence of impact that demonstrate the value of the LIT TRAIN interventions
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in education communications and responsible storytelling within international development contexts

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

• Bachelors degree in Communications Journalism Public Relations or a related field from a recognised institution
• Minimum three years of professional experience in communications roles preferably within education development or NGO sectors
• Proven ability to write edit and produce high-quality content for diverse audiences including technical and non-technical readers
• Experience managing social media channels and creating digital content that engages target audiences effectively
• Strong understanding of donor compliance requirements particularly for foundations like Mastercard Foundation and their reporting standards
• Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to build relationships across organisational boundaries and cultural contexts

Desirable

• Masters degree in Communications Development Studies or Education would be an advantage
• Experience working specifically on teacher training or education quality improvement programmes in East Africa
• Familiarity with the Leaders in Teaching programme or similar Mastercard Foundation funded initiatives
• Knowledge of Ugandan education policy frameworks and teacher professional development systems
• Skills in graphic design basics video editing or multimedia production to enhance communications materials
• Fluency in a local Ugandan language in addition to English would be beneficial for community engagement
