Job Overview
The United Nations Volunteers programme in Uganda is seeking 25 enthusiastic Online Volunteers to support social media and communication efforts. This remote opportunity allows volunteers to contribute to peace and development initiatives from anywhere in Uganda. The role focuses on increasing visibility of UNV work and strengthening community engagement through digital platforms.
Volunteers will work closely with the Regional Communication Assistant to promote corporate and local content across various social media channels. This initiative aims to raise public awareness about volunteerism and expand the reach of UNV programmes in Uganda. No prior experience is required, making this an accessible entry point for those interested in international development work.
The Online Volunteering service connects individuals with organizations needing support, fostering global solidarity and sustainable development. By participating, volunteers gain valuable experience in digital communications while contributing to meaningful causes. The programme emphasizes inclusivity and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds across Uganda.
Key Responsibilities
- Share and promote corporate and local UNV content on Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube platforms regularly.
- Develop creative social media posts, articles, graphics and short videos to engage diverse Ugandan audiences.
- Actively engage with local organizations and communities to foster partnerships and increase campaign reach.
- Organize and participate in local online events such as virtual discussions, webinars and digital storytelling sessions.
- Monitor and report on engagement metrics and feedback from outreach activities using analytics tools.
- Collaborate with the communication team to ensure consistent messaging across all digital channels.
- Research trending topics and local events to create timely and relevant content for Ugandan audiences.
- Support the growth and uptake of the Online Volunteering service at the country level through digital advocacy.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- Basic computer literacy and familiarity with major social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
- Ability to communicate effectively in written English; knowledge of local Ugandan languages is an advantage.
- Access to reliable internet connection and a device capable of accessing social media platforms and email.
- Commitment to volunteer approximately 5-10 hours per week for the duration of the assignment.
- Enthusiasm for learning about international development, volunteerism and UN values and principles.
Desirable
- Previous experience creating content for social media, blogs or newsletters in any volunteer or professional capacity.
- Basic graphic design skills using tools like Canva, Adobe Express or similar free online applications.
- Experience with video editing software for creating short promotional clips or stories for social media.
- Familiarity with analytics tools to measure engagement, reach and audience insights on social platforms.
- Knowledge of Ugandan culture, current events and local community organizations that could be potential partners.
